A final good-bye: Toys R Us closes its doors forever

Today Is the Day Every Last Toys R Us Store Closes

An obvious frontrunner will be Party City, which hired Jamie Uitdenhowen, a former top executive at Toys "R" Us, as its chief merchandising officer in December 2017 (three months after Toys "R" Us filed for bankruptcy).

In the wake of this historic retail event, a photo of the store's mascot, Geoffrey the Giraffe, standing in an empty store with a suitcase, is going viral.

In the less than two days since Johnpiere posted the image on Facebook, it has been shared almost 300,000 times.

I guess everyone has grown up.

Late a year ago, Toys R Us filed for bankruptcy. "Promise us just this one thing: Don't ever grow up". We will miss our conversations of everything, and nothing, and the dreams we had. We made a decision to visit the icon toy store one last time before it closed its doors forever.

So, it would seem those discussions have progressed far enough for Toys "R" Us to some hope to fans through that initial post.

People have turned to social media to express their sadness. "I was surrounded by children".

Another user, @carloslinera22, wrote: 'There are sad moments in life. but this, this broke me completely. Thank you for everything'.

Toys "R" Us chief executive officer Jerry Storch has been, "working with multiple investors on a plan to reboot the retailer in the USA, according to people familiar with the situation, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private".

Geoffrey has acted as the chain's logo and "spokesanimal" for the past 70 years.

Many kids grew up watching Geoffrey the Giraffe in TV commercials.

Troubles for Toys R Us have also shaken big toy makers like Mattel and Hasbro.

The chain slowly began to lose its footing as shoppers moved to Amazon and competitors such as Walmart.
