Uruguay concern over Edinson Cavani injury after Portugal win

Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo was every bit as frustrated as his Barcelona rival after his fruitless attempts to penetrate Uruguay's defence left him without a World Cup knockout stage goal in his career as he prepared to go home from his fourth World Cup at the age of 33. The Real Madrid forward would not be drawn on his future but offered up a message of optimism as he departed the Fisht Stadium in Sochi. There has been speculation that both he and Messi will retire from worldwide football following the action in Russian Federation.

With Uruguay surviving Portugal's last-gasp attacks and advancing to the quarterfinals, where it'll face France on Friday, the availability of Cavani takes on extreme importance given his status as one of Uruguay's most important players.

There were two key hurdles, though.

The marquee match will see two teams who repeatedly punch above their weight looking up to their celebrated talismen to deliver the goods and keep the entire bunch together using their reservoir of experience.

It is an accusation often levelled at Portugal that they are a toothless team if Cristiano Ronaldo has an off-day, but their victory in the Euro 2016 final with their talisman missing most of the game through injury is used as the flawless riposte to that suggestion.

Forty million Argentinians will demand to know why Messi & Co. are returning home early after failing to win it for a third time, whereas nobody really envisaged Portugal as World Cup winners in Russian Federation.

Uruguay were ahead as early as the seventh minute when Cavani and Luis Suarez exchanged passes from one end of the pitch to the other.

Cavani was forced to leave the game in the 74th minute and limped off the field with the assistance of Cristiano Ronaldo.

16 minute: Portugal's Goncalo Guedes attempts a shot from distance but his shot gets blocked by Uruguay defenders.

The victory sets up a quarter-final clash with France next week, who had earlier dispatched Argentina 4-3 thanks to a match-winning performance from rising youngster Kylian Mbappe. A half-time pep talk and constant reinforcement appeared to lift his team-mates, too.

Portugal were level as from a short corner worked to Raphael Guerreiro in the 55th minute as Ronaldo took Godin away. Meanwhile, three of Portugal's last four goals have come from outside the box.

With or without Cavani, though, Uruguay will make it incredibly tough for France and should not be written off.
