Annapolis mayor planning press freedom festival to honor Capital Gazette shooting victims

Morning after mass shooting, Capital Gazette publishes Friday edition

Jarrod Warren Ramos, 38, was charged in the attack.

President Trump took a moment at a White House tax bill event Friday to mourn the five victims of the shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland.

Ramos unsuccessfully sued the newspaper and a journalist in 2012 for defamation, after it published an accurate article about Ramos tormenting a former schoolmate after she rejected his advances online.

"As soon as I saw, I dove under a desk, and then I heard another gunshot", Gillespie said. Authorities responded to the scene within a minute of the shooting, and Ramos was arrested while also hiding under a desk with the shotgun on the floor nearby, police said. But it is hard to ignore the reality of mass shootings that have become nearly commonplace in our society in recent years - in schools, in movie theaters and now in a newsroom. The shootings are believed to be the deadliest attack on journalists in the United States.

It had been dormant since January 2016. The last few days have been hard for everybody in the newspaper industry. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly blasted the "fake news" media, called the attack a "horrible, terrible event" and said no one, including journalists, should fear a violent attack for doing their job.

"We have a bad guy and for his own reasons, he chose to do what he did". Acting Police Chief William Krampf of Anne Arundel County says it was a targeted attack in which the gunman "looked for his victims".

"There was a fear that doing so would exacerbate an already flammable situation", Altomare said. He did not cooperate with the law enforcement.

"His statements may be defamatory, they may be libelous, they may be obnoxious".

"A firearm, you know, [it's] in the national DNA, so they're never gonna go away", Driscoll said.

Two other people were hurt by broken glass, said police. When she blocked him from seeing her Facebook page, he found things she wrote on other people's pages and taunted her with it, attaching screenshots of the postings to some of his emails. But Twitter, Ramos' apparent platform of choice, has always been dogged by rampant abuse problems.

People don't have to use their real names on Twitter.

Ramos' grudge against the paper resembled a war of sorts, court documents suggest. "I don't think anybody in their right mind, here or anywhere in the rest of the country, would think it would come to down this". He tweeted at the newspaper's official account, @capgaznews, 149 times.

He added there was evidence to show he meant to "kill as many people as he could". His lawyer told the newspaper that Ramos has a degree in computer engineering and had worked for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics for six years. She says it's sad to see such violence "in places that you thought were the safer places". "Often aggressive comments fall short of content moderation language". It reveals a fundamental failure to understand what defamation law is and more particularly, what defamation law is not. After McCarthy got a second protective order for his client and agreed to accept all pleadings and correspondence on her behalf, Ramos allegedly began to harass him too. Clark said cybercrime has simply been a lower priority for federal prosecutors. The paper, like any publication, had amassed some disgruntled readers, he said, but "a lot of the times it was just people calling us 'The Crapital, ' getting upset at how we portrayed anything".

The FBI identified four men who sent threats of rape and murder to women, including Wu.
