Tiger charges but fades as Ancer, Molinari lead National

Tiger Woods hits out of the sand on the third hole during the third round of the Quicken Loans National golf tournament in Potomac Md

In his final start before the third major of the season, Tiger Woods closed the Quicken Loans National with a four-under 66 on Sunday in Potomac, Md.

The world No 17 produced a world-class display and played a five-hole stretch in six under on his way to a bogey-free 62 at TPC Potomac, ending the week on a tournament record-low of 21 under and becoming the first Italian victor on the PGA Tour since 1947.

Highlights from Francesco Molinari's bogey-free 62 during the final round of the Quicken Loans National. Molinari closed with back-to-back birdies to shoot 65 and share the lead, two strokes ahead of Americans Ryan Armour and Zac Blair on 199 with Andrew Landry on 200 and Kevin Streelman, who set the course record Friday, sixth on 201. Woods tied for fourth, his best result since a runner-up finish at the Valspar Championship three months ago, though he was 10 shots behind.

Molinari finished his first nine holes at two under for the round, but he pulled away when he reached the back nine.

Woods then made four birdies in a row at the fourth through seventh holes, none longer than 12 feet.

"I stuffed it at 10, and I stuffed it at 11. If I can do like I've done most of my career, putts go in".

"I don't know if the course is going to be set-up like that but you just never know as it's been warm over there, and the grass has probably been growing".

"It was a lot easier than I thought", Molinari said with a wide grin.

And yet, with a new putter in the bag this week, Woods felt good about the improvement he made on the greens. He was making a lot of putts on the front nine.

When co-leader Ancer opened with a bogey, finding sand with his first two shots, Molinari took the lead for good. Molinari, a two-time Ryder Cup player with a World Golf Championship among his credentials, overcame a few putts he missed from short range to close with two birdies to join Ancer at 13-under 197. Three birdies later, he was nine shots clear and on his way to victory in the Quicken Loans National.

"I'm glad I gave myself a chance", Woods said.

Woods spent four days at TPC Potomac knocking down flagsticks with his precise iron play keeping him just on the edge of contention.

There were flashes of brilliance this week, enough to make it seem like the Tiger Woods of old was destined to make one last appearance in the spotlight.

Julian Suri had a one-shot lead playing the 18th hole and hit his approach into the water, making double bogey.

But Woods missed a putt inside of 11 feet at No. 10 and inside of 13 feet one hole later.
