Pompeo arrives in North Korea

Pompeo said he was seeking to "fill in" some details on North Korea's commitments and maintain the momentum towards implementing the agreement from the summit, according to the pool report.

The report of a potential nuclear-armed submarine comes as officials form the CIA and other intelligence agencies told NBC News on Saturday that North Korea has increased its production of enriched uranium - despite Kim Jong Un's historic summit with President Trump last month.

Citing sources in Washington, The Chosun Ilbo newspaper reports that the presents - the other of which is a letter from the U.S. president - reflect Mr Trump's expectation that Mr Kim will follow through on the denuclearisation pledge he made during their summit in Singapore last month.

President Donald Trump met Kim at a historic summit in Singapore last month and the U.S. leader has been bullish about hopes for peace, boasting that the threat of nuclear war is over. The words "nuclear", "weapons", and "denuclearization" were not used in their opening remarks to each other.

Before the meeting, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert cautioned expectations should not be high, saying they don't expect any deliverables like a timeline or blueprint for denuclearization, an accounting of North Korea's weapons and facilities, or even an update on the status of American remains from the Korean War.

But the statement the leaders signed was short on clear commitments.

But U.S. news accounts in recent days have shown pictures of what is said to be the expansion of nuclear-related buildings in North Korea.

It says pressure will remain until North Korea denuclearises, but in statements this week, it redefined the U.S. goal as "the final, fully verified denuclearisation" of the country.

Pompeo arrives in Pyongyang on Friday for a two-day visit. "He has been a faithful facilitator", he said of the South Korean leader, adding that the president had "sometimes mediated between Pyongyang and Washington when there was a stumbling block between the two".

It was unclear whether Cho would meet with Kim or Pompeo, the unification ministry said.

But on June 28, Pompeo told the Senate Appropriations Committee, "We have not yet physically received them".

The CD reportedly features the song "Rocket Man", the classic hit that inspired Trump's nickname for Kim Jong Un in 2017. Along with the United States, Japan has led an worldwide pressure campaign against the North.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said last month that the United Nations command in South Korea would initially take charge of the transfer of remains - when they occur - and would then turn them over to the custody of the US military.

Pompeo is set to reach Pyongyang on Friday for further talks on denuclearization of the country.

"If they're serious, then we can get down to the business of defining the terms of final denuclearisation", said one official.

Coincidentally, Trump invoked Elton John during his Thursday night rally in Montana, although completely unrelated to "Rocket Man" Kim Jong Un.

But it remains uncertain whether Japan will heed North Korea's call, as it continues to seek a comprehensive resolution of the nuclear, missile and abduction issues.
