Democratic senators immediately pledge to block Trump SCOTUS pick

Democrats' long-shot plan to stop Trump's Supreme Court pick

Trump tweeted Sunday that he will announce his pick on Monday at 9 p.m. EDT.

Republicans called the choice a triumph and rallied behind Kavanaugh.

A favorite of the Republican legal establishment in Washington, Kavanaugh, 53, is a former law clerk for retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy. And he also led the investigation into the mysterious suicide of Clinton's deputy White House counsel, Vince Foster. It was ruled a suicide, but conspiracy theorists were not so certain. After that he became a staff secretary for Bush, often traveling with the president.

Kavanaugh is likely to be more conservative than Justice Kennedy on a range of social issues.

Kavanaugh's record will come under particular scrutiny for clues as to how he might vote in any future review of Roe v Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that guaranteed a woman's right to an abortion. But some conservatives expressed dismay that Kavanaugh did not declare that the teen had no constitutional right to an elective abortion.

"Bob Casey was for Judge Hardiman before he was against him, showing yet again that Casey will oppose anything President Trump does, even if it means contradicting himself", Barletta said in a statement. Barrett has only served as a federal judge since last fall, raising concerns about her experience, but has been a Notre Dame Law School professor for many years.

"I look forward to meeting with Judge Kavanaugh and to the Senate's fair consideration of his nomination, beginning with the work of Chairman Grassley and the Judiciary Committee".

"It is my honour and privilege to announce that I will nominate Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court", Trump said late on Monday from the White House.

The officials underscored that McConnell did not push any choice on the president.

Others, however, perceived time was of the essence.

Some social conservatives have anxious that Judge Kavanaugh, if he reaches the high court, would follow in the footsteps of Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., who is viewed as being among the more moderate of Republican-appointed justices.

Democrats are ramping up opposition to the president's eventual pick with a focus on the prospect that the candidate that's confirmed would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, a decades-old ruling that struck down laws that criminalized or restricted access to abortions.

"There is no one in America more qualified for this position and no one more deserving", Trump said, urging the Senate to swiftly confirm his nominee.

Kavanaugh would keep the number of Catholics on the high court at five.

Mr Kavanaugh also served as a former aide to President George W Bush.

"I will oppose the nomination the President will make tonight because it represents a corrupt bargain with the far Right, big corporations, and Washington special interests", said Casey in a statement.

Kavanaugh is Trump's second high court pick after Justice Neil Gorsuch. Abortion will be a key issue in the confirmation process. "This is partially due to the cases it has been asked to decide, such as the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, and it is partially due to the divided nature of American politics". We don't know who the nominee is going to be yet", Jones told CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union.

A third finalist, Amy Comey Barrett, was seen at her home in IN just a few hours before Trump was set to unveil his nominee at a White House ceremony.

Joining us here in the studio was Amy Weintraub.

Some opponents stressed that Trump worked off a list compiled by members of conservative legal organizations, particularly the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation.

Critics accused Trump of outsourcing his selection to the conservative groups.

Senator Dianne Feinstein said Trump's choice "could have a bigger effect on Americans' daily lives than any justice in our lifetime".

Trump has been uncharacteristically circumspect about what he is thinking as the process has unfolded.

JCN played an active role in opposing the 2016 candidacy of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court - a nomination that died during the final months of the Obama presidency - and supported the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court a year ago.
