I’m confident Kim Jong Un will honour our contract

North Korea says it won’t bow down to “gangster-like” U.S. on denuclearization

Asked about the possibility of Trump making a deal that would eliminate long-range missiles that threaten the United States as part of these first steps, Wit and Gallucci both said such a move would be a welcome step - despite concerns from USA allies Japan and South Korea.

He added that talks would be held soon on the destruction of North Korea's missile engine testing facility.

President Donald Trump tweeted Monday that he's confident Kim Jong Un will honor their "contract" and handshake in Singapore to denuclearize, even as he suggested that China may be responsible for North Korea showing new hesitance to move forward on the goal.

"We expected that the U.S. side would bring itself with a constructive proposal which would help build up trust true to the spirit of the DPRK-U.S. summit meeting and talks", the statement read.

The North's statement, coming so soon after Pompeo's trip, was sure to fuel growing skepticism in the USA over how serious Kim is about giving up his nuclear arsenal. The US will have a harder time reapplying pressure after Kim used his detente with Trump to improve ties with key neighbors such as China and South Korea.

Though Trump claimed "there is no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea" following the Singapore summit, USA officials cited by NBC News reported that the country is still covertly producing uranium for nuclear weapons.

"I see China's hands all over this", said Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, saying he thought the Chinese were "pulling back" North Korea because of the U.S.

Pompeo maintained that his third visit to the country had produced results, but also vowed that sanctions would remain until Pyongyang follows through on North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's pledge to get rid of his atomic weapons.

The North Korean leader says he is committed to denuclearisation, but how this will be achieved is unclear.

The administration worked for months to win China's support for its "maximum pressure" campaign of sanctions to isolate North Korea, which does most of its worldwide trade with the Chinese.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made another trip in Pyongyang last week to meet with the regime's dictator and begin to negotiate the terms for a planned denuclearization of North Korea. "But this expectation and hope of ours was so naive as to be gullible", the statement said.

In comments to reporters before leaving Pyongyang, Pompeo said his conversations with senior North Korean official Kim Yong Chol had been "productive", conducted "in good faith" and that "a great deal of progress" had been made in some areas.

After two days of talks with senior officials, he said efforts to push Pyongyang towards abandoning nuclear weapons had worldwide backing.

Vipin Narang, an associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said the North Koreans were signaling that they have no plans to give up their nuclear arsenal without major concessions.

Richard Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations, said on Twitter there was a danger of military action because Trump might now say he had tried diplomacy but was betrayed by Kim. But for political considerations, including the fight for control of Congress in November elections, would Trump make a deal?
