They did not indicate a specific location where the attack occurred.

On Saturday, NATO's Resolute Support mission said the two USA service members wounded in "an apparent insider attack" are in stable condition. The Afghan province that has seen the highest number of attacks is Helmand to the south, a Taliban stronghold and the heart of Afghanistan's opium-growing industry.

The so-called "green-on-blue" attack is the latest in a series of incidents in which Afghan forces have turned their weapons on global troops with whom they are working. The statement and an Afghan official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation, said the attack occurred in Uruzgan province.

Maciel's honors include the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon, the Columbus, Ga., newspaper site says.

Maciel was deployed from Fort Benning, Georgia, which straddles the Alabama and Georgia border, near Columbus, Ga., and he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. "Our prayers are with his family and friends during this hard time".

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo used an unannounced trip Monday to Afghanistan to step up the Trump administration's calls for peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban. Efforts to impose a ceasefire in the region have been mostly unsuccessful.

The number of insider attacks peaked at 61 in 2012, but the attacks have become rare after the USA military instituted security safeguards to protect American troops. "And I will tell you honestly, we have had our Afghan partners come to us with intelligence that preempted potential attacks, and they have been proactively taking care of their own problems".
