Federer falls to Anderson in five-set epic at Wimbledon

"It's one of those average days you have to try to win the match, and I just couldn't get it done today".

Roger Federer's Wimbledon title defence is over following a dramatic five-set quarterfinal loss to an inspired Kevin Anderson on Wednesday (Thursday NZ Time).

"I kept telling myself to keep believing".

"I think just the more experience you get, just managing these sort of matches, managing your body better".

When he finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the US Open a year ago, he was the first South African man in a Slam final since Curren at the 1984 Australian Open.

Federer suffered his earliest exit at Wimbledon since a shock second-round defeat against Sergiy Stakhovsky in 2013. You feel like it's getting closer with [Angelique] Kerber and players like that but you just feel Serena wants to define history. Today was one of those days. "I didn't see it coming", said Federer. "I had moments where I was great, I felt like I was reading his serve, other moments where I don't know where the hell I was moving to".

The 32-year-old will face John Isner in the last four after the American beat Milos Raonic.

Federer, who lost from two sets up for the fifth time in his career, said: "It was just a bad day from my side, except the first set".

It was a surprise result that now sends the eighth-seeded Anderson to the semifinals at Wimbledon, his first time making it that far in the storied competition that Federer has won eight times, including past year.

The prospect of a Roger Federer-Rafael Nadal Wimbledon final is no more.

"I had my chances and blew them", said Federer, who lost a Wimbledon match in which he had a match point for the first time.

A jubilant Anderson, US Open runner-up previous year, celebrated his first win over Federer in five attempts and a maiden appearance in a Wimbledon semi-final.

Two unforced errors from Anderson handed Federer the first break within the first two minutes and the Swiss opened up a 3-1 lead with a quick-fire ace. The match was played there after Novak Djokovic, having played three of his opening four matches away from Centre Court, had his request to play in the main stadium granted. After fighting back from match point and love-40 on his serve to take the third set, the South African broke Federer in the seventh game of the fourth set. He already has one Grand Slam title on the year from the Australian Open. By the end I was able to do a great job and I wasn't thinking too much. He had showed some vulnerability in losing the Indian Wells final to Juan Martin del Potro and the final in Halle, his playground, to youngster Borna Coric. In some ways he deserves to win as well.

'I'm pleased I'll be staying there right now'.

Djokovic is a 12-time major champion who's been in something of a rut, due to right elbow troubles that lasted more than a year until he finally had surgery in February.

Asked how important it was for his own campaign to be scheduled on Centre Court, Djokovic said: 'Yes, very important. It's the second-farthest he's advanced in a Grand Slam tournament, having made the final of the US Open in 2017.

The 12-time major victor prevailed despite picking up two code violations and accusing umpire Carlos Ramos of "double standards".
