Man charged with hate crime over Puerto Rican shirt incident

Officer Who Didn’t Step In When Woman In Puerto Rico Shirt Was Harassed Resigns

A man seen in a video harassing a woman in a Chicago park for wearing a Puerto Rico shirt is now facing hate crime charges. He has a bail hearing Friday afternoon in Skokie.

Trybus appeared in court Friday on charges of a hate crime, assault and disorderly conduct.

The incident made national headlines this week after a video on social media showed Trybus approaching a woman, identified as Mia Irizarry, as she stood near a picnic grove in Caldwell Woods, a recreational area in the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, a green belt that surrounds Chicago.

In the video, Trybus could be seen telling the woman that she should not be wearing the T-shirt in the United States, despite her attempting to explain that Puerto Rico is a USA territory. "Are you a United States citizen?" he screamed, referring to the shirt as "un-American". He also ordered him placed on electronic home monitoring, to undergo alcohol assessment, and prohibited him from having any contact with Irizarry or any witnesses in the case or set foot on forest preserve property.

"Officer, officer? I feel highly uncomfortable". "I really do believe there are people who say to themselves, 'If Trump can do it, I can do it".

Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia criticized the district for not acting more swiftly to discipline the officer.

Eventually the first officer on the scene takes notes of Irizarry's account of the incident and says that he was at the scene due to the separate incident, noting that she was not being attacked though acknowledging she felt threatened. "We intend to use the video in future training exercises for our officers". He started yelling at her, asking among other things, if she is a USA citizen. "Can you please get away from me?"

"All of the lying, hostility and racism is taking a toll on our country".

In the part of the video that went viral, Officer Connor's voice is never heard and he apparently does nothing.

Officer Patrick Connor was supposed to have a sit down with his bosses about the incident, but instead he quit on July 11, The Chicago-Sun Times reported.

On Monday, Forest Preserves of Cook County, which administers the park, tweeted that it was aware of the incident and video, and that it had launched an investigation.

CNN has attempted to reach Trybus for comment.

As Trybus continues to harass her other officers arrived and a female police officer finally steps in on behalf of Irizarry.
