Russia says U.S. indictment over election meddling is groundless

The Department of Justice announced that Attorney General Rod Rosenstein would be holding a press conference for a special law enforcement announcement

Although the broad outlines of the Russian hacking and influence campaign ahead of the 2016 USA election have been widely reported, the indictment of 12 Russian military intelligence officers by special counsel Robert Mueller describes for the first time the identities, techniques and tactics of the operation to disrupt American democracy.

The Justice Department's indictment of 12 Russian military intelligence agents on Friday was jaw-dropping in its scope and level of details into attempts to influence the 2016 USA presidential election.

In case you missed it, Russian military intelligence officers at Moscow's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) were indicted on Friday for their alleged role in the hack of the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). Stone is not implicated in the hackers' theft of Democratic emails, but appears to be one of several Americans whose interactions with the alleged hackers are detailed in the new indictment.

Stone, who campaigned for Trump and previously admitted to having directly communicated with Guccifer, stated he believed it was incorrect to characterize Guccifer as a Russian agent and that it was merely "guessing".

Deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein tapped Mueller to oversee the Russian Federation probe in May 2017, after Trump fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey. "As he testified before the House Intelligence Committee under oath, his 24-word exchange with someone on Twitter claiming to be Guccifer 2.0 is benign, based on its content, context and timing". "There is no allegation that the conspiracy changed the vote count or affected any election result, '" deputy White House press secretary Lindsay Walters said in a statement Friday.

Trump said he would "absolutely, firmly ask" Putin about the meddling at their planned meeting in Helsinki on Monday.

On Friday, Special Counsel Robert Mueller unveiled an indictment of 12 Russians whom he has accused of the breach.

According to the indictment, the hackers also stole personal information of at least 500,000 voters and gained entry to a system involved with voter registration. Time for Mueller to end this pursuit of the President and say President Trump is completely innocent.

The officers belonged to Russian military intelligence agency called GRU. The Russian officials allegedly then obtained "thousands of stolen emails and documents" that they released through the domain DCLeaks.com while promoting themselves as "American hacktivists".

On July 27, 2016, Trump famously said, "Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing". He said the indictments are "further proof of what everyone but the president seems to understand: President Putin is an adversary who interfered in our elections to help President Trump win".

Among those who have been indicted in connection to the special counsel probe are former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort, campaign adviser Rick Gates, George Papadopoulos, a foreign policy adviser on the campaign, and former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
