Trump says he 'misspoke' after Putin meeting, accepts Russian election meddling

Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo

"I have felt very strongly that while Russia's actions had no impact at all on the outcome of the election, let me be totally clear in saying that - and I've said this many times - I accept our intelligence community's conclusion that Russia's meddling in the 2016 election took place". But he added, as he usually does, "It could be other people also". "There's a lot of people out there". "There was no collusion at all".

Earlier in the day, Trump sounded a defensive note, insisting his meeting with Putin had been "even better" than his one last week with traditional allies NATO - a testy gathering seen as having badly strained trans-Atlantic ties. In a blog called PressThink, New York University professor Jay Rosen has written some of the most thoughtful and trenchant warnings that major media organizations have normalized a president who simply is not normal, by refusing to adapt their methods to deal with Trump's distract-and-overwhelm tactics.

President Donald Trump is meeting with congressional lawmakers at the White House today, but indications suggest that he will open up the conversation by addressing his controversial summit with Vladimir Putin. Other party leaders and lawmakers called it "disgraceful", "shameful", "regrettable" and "disappointing".

In a news briefing later on Wednesday, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that "The president ... was saying "No" to answering questions ..." Bob Corker of Tennessee.

"He just said it's not Russian Federation".

It was the President himself who determined in a meeting that he wanted to say he had misspoken, according to officials familiar with the matter, who said Trump led the crafting of the clarification that unfolded Tuesday afternoon. "What we intend to do is make sure they don't get away with it again and also to help our allies".

Standing alongside Mr Putin at a press conference following talks between the two leaders on Tuesday, Mr Trump said he was not convinced Moscow had attempted to tip the election in his favour.

"The president needs to understand he has damaged US foreign policy", Representative Mike Turner, a Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, told CNN.

But minority Democrats have few tools to push their priorities.

President Trump is still facing an uphill battle following his shocking remarks about Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election, but the initial outrage is starting to wear off. John Cornyn of Texas, said sanctions may be preferable to a nonbinding resolution that amounts to "just some messaging exercise".

In an interview with CBS News' Jeff Glor airing Wednesday evening, Trump expressed confidence in US intelligence agencies and said he agreed with their assessment.

We're doing very well, and let me tell you, we are doing very well, and we're doing very well, probably as well as anybody has ever done with Russian Federation.

"He just said it's not Russian Federation".

"Some people HATE the fact that I got along well with President Putin of Russian Federation...they would rather go to war than see this". That's the part he corrected on Tuesday.

His scepticism drew a quick formal statement, nearly a rebuttal, from Mr Trump's director of national intelligence, Dan Coats.

Today's clarification from Mr Trump comes amid an ongoing investigation into possible collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation during the 2016 election.

While Trump has faced intense criticism over Helsinki, he is not entirely without defenders. Trump appeared to respond: "Thank you. No".

In all, Trump's remarks amounted to an unprecedented embrace of a man who for years has been isolated by the USA and Western allies for actions in Ukraine, Syria and beyond.

In response, Trump said his "people came to me" and said "they think it's Russian Federation".

"President Trump must clarify his statements in Helsinki on our intelligence system and Putin", he tweeted as Trump headed home from Helsinki.
