New Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri 'forced to deny being homophobic, sexist'

Antonio Conte's turbulent reign at Chelsea has come to an end

Chelsea's players have returned to pre-season training at the club's base and will soon be introduced to their new manager as Conte departed the club yesterday afternoon.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had earlier reported that Chelsea are planning to sack their manager Antonio Conte before the club starts preparations for the 2018-19 league season.

Conte thanked his players, staff and the Blues fans, adding: "It was fantastic for me to be able to share my emotions, passion and enthusiasm throughout two unforgettable seasons with these unbelievable Chelsea supporters, who will always stay in my heart".

Sarri won plaudits for the expansive passing football his Napoli team played in the three seasons he was in charge, but he failed to halt Juventus' dominance of Serie A and ended his spell in southern Italy without a trophy.

Finishing fifth in the league in 2017-18, missing out on Champions League qualification, and friction with the Chelsea hierarchy and influential players prompted Conte's departure after two seasons.

Conte joined the Roman Abramovich-owned club in 2016 and led them to the league title in his debut season along with an FA Cup triumph last campaign.

Chelsea have signed Italy midfielder Jorginho from Napoli after Manchester City pulled out of a £50m deal.

But Napoli's president on Wednesday revealed Jorginho was ready to snub City after lengthy negotiations because he "prefers London".

"I hope Chelsea will continue to be successful and I wish everyone well for next season".

Chelsea finally put an end to Conte's two-year reign on Friday.
