Images Show North Korea Dismantling Missile Test Site Facilities

US-Led Sanctions Still Crippling North Korea's Economy

US-based website 38 North published imagery Monday indicating that Pyongyang has begun taking down a processing building and a rocket-engine test stand that had been used to test liquid-fuel engines at its Sohae Satellite Launching Station.

Other experts said North Korea is giving up little in dismantling the rocket engine test center.

Sohae, on the northwest coast of North Korea, is ostensibly a facility designed for putting satellites into orbit, but rocket engines are easily repurposed for use in missiles and the worldwide community has labelled Pyongyang's space program a fig leaf for weapons tests.

Despite the recent reports of Pyongyang possibly expanding its nuclear arsenal, Brooks emphasized that the country has not conducted a ballistic missile test in nearly a year. In February 2016, the North launched its Gwangmyeongsong-4 satellite at the site, a month after the fourth nuclear test, according to Hankyoreh.

North Korea has started dismantling rocket launching and testing facilities that it agreed to in an off-the-books deal with President Donald Trump, and it's a major United States victory in what have been fraught and slow-moving talks.

An official from South Korea's presidential office said Tuesday that Seoul has also seen the activities at the Sohae launch site.

South Korea's central bank said North Korea's gross domestic product shrank 3.5 percent a year ago, marking the biggest decline since 1997, citing worldwide sanctions and drought.

Pompeo made the remarks after he and US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, as well as with leaders from Japan, South Korea and the entire UN Security Council on Friday.

A day after the summit last month Trump said in a tweet, "There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea".

" So we've seen the open press reporting about the missile engine test site, it'd be entirely consistent with the commitment that Chairman Kim made to President Trump when the two of them were in Singapore together, made that commitment to them orally".

CNN reported on Monday that continued negotiations between the two sides hinge on Washington's willingness to make a "bold move" and agree to a peace treaty with Pyongyang, according to an official with close knowledge of North Korea's position on the matter.

The launching site played helped the rogue regime develop their intercontinental ballistic missile program.

If the U.S. is unwilling to replace the armistice agreement that ended the Korean War with a permanent peace that would ensure the survival of Kim's regime, Pyongyang will likely not proceed further with denuclearization talks, the source said.

And the steps taken by North Korea so far are all reversible, says Dr Narang.
