Israel's David Sling interceptor system fired on two SS-21 Tochka tactical ballistic missiles launched from Syria Monday.

The source said the plane fell in a pocket of territory held by Islamic State-affiliated forces adjoining the occupied Golan Heights.

Two Patriot missiles intercepted the Russian-made Sukhoi on Tuesday afternoon, the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.

The IDF said that the plane was under surveillance as it approached and breached the border.

It was not immediately clear if the pilot ejected safely or was killed in the blast.

In the dead of night and with help from countries including the United States, Canada, Jordan, Israel and the United Kingdom, the rescuers got rescued themselves.

Israel shot down a Syrian fighter jet Tuesday over the northern part of the country. "We will not accept any such penetration, or spillover into, our territory, neither on the ground nor in the air".

Eyewitnesses said they saw the projectiles land in the water - one of them exploding, and the other not, the TV report said.

Israel says it shot down a Syrian fighter jet that penetrated its airspace on Tuesday, but Damascus says the warplane was sacked on as it took part in operations against rebels on Syrian territory.

The last time Israel shot down a Syrian plane was in September 2014, when another Syrian warplane violated Israeli airspace.

Tuesday's incident followed a rise in internal fighting in Syria earlier in the morning, including more activity by the Syrian Air Force, Israel claimed.

But with regard to Iran, an avowed enemy of the Jewish state, Netanyahu said: "Israel will continue to act against any attempt by Iran and its proxies to entrench militarily in Syria".

"It was shot down and it crashed...most likely in the southern part of the Syrian Golan Heights", Israeli military spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Jonathan Conricus said. The government forces reached the border fence with the U.N.'s Disengagement Observer Force.

Incoming rocket sirens blared across the Israeli Golan Heights, sending residents of the area scrambling to bomb shelters.

The jet crashed on the Syrian-heold side of the Golan Height, according to the Israel Defense Forces, which appeared to acknowledge that its mission was related to the civil war inside Syria.
