House Republicans File To Impeach Rod Rosenstein

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions gestures during a news conference at the Moakley Federal Building in Boston Thursday

Reps. Mark Meadows and Jim Jordan are among 11 Republican lawmakers who filed a resolution Wednesday calling for Rosenstein to be impeached, the Washington Post reports. It should go without saying that even if the House impeached Rosenstein, there's no way the Senate would come up with the two-thirds margin necessary to make him the first non-presidential executive branch official since Ulysses Grant's corrupt Secretary of War William Belknap to be removed from his position by Congress. Enough is enough, ' Jordan said in a statement on Wednesday. The department has provided lawmakers with more than 800,000 documents, but Meadows said after the meeting that there was still "frustration" with how Justice has handled the oversight requests. If Trump ultimately decides to fire Rosenstein, says MoveOn.org's Ben Wikler, "that absolutely triggers" nationwide protests.

A group of House Republicans introduced articles of impeachment against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Wednesday.

Democrats have accused Republicans of trying to discredit the Justice Department, and, by extension, the special counsel's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 US election.

The lawmakers did not file the articles as a "privileged resolution," a move that would have forced Republican leadership to consider the measure within two legislative days. It's time to find a new Deputy Attorney General who is serious about accountability and transparency.

The Department of Justice, under the supervision of Mr. Rosenstien, redacted FBI Agent Peter Strzok's personal relationship with FISC Judge Rudolph Contreras.

"Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein's failure to recuse himself in light of this inherent conflict of interest and failure to recommend the appointment of a second Special Counsel constitute dereliction of duty", the resolution continued. House Republicans have been entangled in a back and forth with the Justice Department for months over access to classified Federal Bureau of Investigation documents.

Congressional committees have sought information concerning the Department of Justice's (DOJ) handling of high-profile investigations into allegations of collusion between President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, along with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server to conduct official USA diplomatic business. Rosenstein, along with FBI Director Christopher Wray, faced dozens of angry Republicans at a House hearing last month.

Democrats have argued the focus on Rosenstein is an attempt to broadly undermine the Mueller investigation.

'The DOJ is keeping information from Congress. Part of that effort, Democrats have said, includes what they see as Republicans making unreasonable document demands tied to the ongoing Russian Federation investigation.
