Zoo accused of painting donkey to look like a zebra

Is this a zebra or donkey? The zoo says zebra but the visitor says donkey

Mahmoud Sarhan visited the Cairo International Park.

In 2010, a zoo in Gaza painted stripes on two donkeys it purchased for $700 because they were much cheaper than the $30,000 zebras.

Oh, and the black paint around its face had been smudged in the heat.

Sky News have reported that Egyptian student, Mahmoud Sarhan, 18, was visiting the International Garden in Nasr City, Cairo, when he spotted the suspiciously-striped creature. Zebra stripes are straighter and more consistent, they said.

He posted a picture on his Facebook page, which quickly went viral.

Mr Sarhan told Extranews that the enclosure contained two animals and that both had been painted. Subscribe to the Standard Group SMS service by texting "NEWS" to 22840.

The zoo denied the allegations, with the zoo's director, Mohamed Sultan, insisting the zebras were not fakes.

We might as well explain how we know it's a donkey - Alex Adams, a wildlife biologist and researcher at Colorado State University, said there was no doubt it was something other than a zebra.

A visitor to a Cairo zoo poses for a photo with one of the "Zebras" in the zoo which are suspected to be painted donkeys. The accusations came after a visitor to the zoo took a picture and shared it online of less-than-stellar looking zebra.

In 2013, a Chinese zoo put a Tibetan mastiff dog in the African lion display.
