2nd firefighter dies fighting blaze near Yosemite National Park

5 Killed Including 2 Children and Their Great-Great Grandmother in California Wildfires

Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko said Sunday that the remains were found within the boundary of the Carr Fire near Redding, about 230 miles (370 kilometers) north of San Francisco.

The sixth victim, who was not identified, did not evacuate despite receiving an evacuation warning, Bosenko said.

The fire has also claimed the lives of two firefighters and two children and their great-grandmother.

The erratic flames are blamed for seven deaths, including 70-year-old Melody Bledsoe and her great-grandchildren, 4-year-old Emily Roberts and 5-year-old James Roberts. Cal Fire unified incident commander Bret Gouvea said cooler temperatures and increased humidity had given firefighters a window of opportunity to attack the massive fire.

A Go Fund Me effort, launched overnight to help Ed Bledsoe, had raised nearly half its $30,000 goal by midday Sunday. The weather service notes that "spreading is not driven by the wind, but rather the fire itself", meaning the rising of hot air and gases inside the fire creates a wind that feeds it. The Ferguson Fire near Yosemite, which has charred 46,675 acres, was 29 percent contained.

California fire officials say wildfires around the state have forced roughly 50,000 people from their homes.

Ed Bledsoe said he wasn't able to use his usual route to get home because of traffic congestion in the fire area, so he left his auto and tried to make it home on foot but that, too, was not possible. He was the second bulldozer operator killed in a California blaze in less than two weeks. It has burned 150 acres (61 hectares).

Cal Fire spokeswoman Tricia Austin said Sunday the blazes were each 5 percent contained.

The Carr Fire, the deadliest and most destructive of almost 90 wildfires burning from Texas to OR, has charred 89,194 acres (36,095 hectares) of drought-parched vegetation since erupting last Monday. "We are seeing fire whirls - literally what can be described as a tornado", California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) chief Ken Pimlott told media.

The weather forecast for the south part of the Carr Fire near Igo for Saturday calls for a high of 110 degrees, 11 percent relative humidity, and variable winds at 5 to 10 miles per hour gusting up to 13.

"However, the possibility does exist that there may be far more grave situations for some of them", Cogle said.

The conditions the firefighters are facing are unprecedented, a mix of "incredibly hot temperatures, steep terrain and heavy wind".

The flames erupted into a firestorm on Thursday when they jumped across the Sacramento River and swept into the western side of Redding, about 240km north of Sacramento. Flames have destroyed 517 structures in the Redding area, Cal Fire said.

Five homes have been destroyed, more than 4,900 structures are threatened and an estimated 6,000 people have been evacuated in Idyllwild and several neighboring communities.

A deadly Northern California wildfire has destroyed more than 500 buildings and is threatening thousands more as it rages into its fourth day.

The fire, which started on Monday, also killed Don Ray Smith, an 81-year-old bulldozer operator who was working with fire crews to try to bring the fire under control, officials said.

"We have experienced a lot of looting in these evacuation zones", Redding Police Chief Roger Moore said, adding that police had made at least one arrest and were searching for several other suspects.

Anna Noland, 49, was evacuated twice in three days before learning through video footage Saturday that the house she last saw under dark and windy skies had burned. She said she nearly grabbed a box of mementos - trinkets, diaries, ticket stubs from her favorite movies - but then thought it would take up too much room in the vehicle.
