Leslie Moonves remains CBS chairman amid sexual misconduct probe

Leslie Moonves

On Monday's episode of "The Late Show" on CBS, Colbert noted that a theme of the recent Me Too movement against workplace sexual harassment is the tendency of people to discredit or downplay sexual abuse allegations against someone they agree with or are close to. He has also been waging a battle for independence with mogul Shari Redstone, who wants to combine CBS with its sibling company Viacom.

Kirgo said she made an allusion to Moonves' wife, and her feelings about a one-on-one dinner between the two.

Now it's Monday, and the board is tasked with figuring out how to approach that investigation during their normally scheduled meeting.

Following Monday's board meeting, CBS announced that it postponed the company's 2018 annual meeting of stockholders that was previously scheduled for August 10 until further notice.

At first, it was no surprise that Stephen Colbert joked about Leslie Moonves at the top of CBS's "The Late Show" on Monday night.

The company has shed more than $1.5 billion in value since Friday, when the New Yorker publishing a damning expose featuring accusations from six women about sexual misconduct involving Moonves.

Douglas alleges that during a private meeting in his office in 1997, Moonves held her down on a couch and began "violently kissing" her; after becoming aroused, the CBS exec lifted her skirt and thrust against her. "Those were mistakes, and I regret them immensely", Moonves said.

"Now, I'll have some more to say on this over at the desk, later, assuming we make it past the commercial break", he said. "But I always understood and respected - and abided by the principle - that "no" means 'no, ' and I have never misused my position to harm or hinder anyone's career". Moonves denies or says he doesn't recall numerous details from the report. "'You're very expensive, and I need to know you're worth it, ' " he told her. Dinah refused and neither sister ever heard from Moonves again. "The allegations against Moonves warrant investigation, however, he should step aside while that process plays out", shareholder and National Center for Public Policy Research general counsel Justin Danhof told Fox News. And it may have a wider-reaching effect as CBS faces a potential merger Moonves is fighting tooth and nail.

Farrow spoke to 30 current and former CBS employees who described a culture that tolerated harassment, gender discrimination, or retaliation at various parts of the company including "CBS Evening News" and "60 Minutes".
