Riot police on Harare streets amid poll tensions

Zimbabwe's incumbent President and candidate Emmerson Mnangagwa arrives for his closing presidential campaign rally in Harare

Has promised to rebuild the country's devastated economy, but has been criticised for making extravagant promises - such as the introduction of a high-speed bullet train and bringing the Olympics to Zimbabwe.

The final result in the presidential poll is due by 4 August, but could be released sooner.

The commission's results showed President Emmerson Mnangagwa - who took over leading Zanu PF after Mugabe was ousted - won the big majority against 41 seats for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

As gunfire echoed through downtown Harare, Mnangagwa called for calm and urge patience while results were collated.

Al Jazeera's Haru Mutasa reports from Harare.

Armoured personnel carriers ferried troops and riot police to the scene.

Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said the army had been deployed in Harare to disperse a violent crowd and to restore "peace and tranquility".

Zimbabwe's opposition says its candidate, Nelson Chamisa, has won Monday's presidential election.

It comes as Zimbabwe's president warned against making "provocative statements" as protesters ran rampant through the streets.

"This is our government". This is exactly why we wanted change. "They are stealing our election". "We further urge the Defense Forces of Zimbabwe to use restraint in dispersing protesters", the USA embassy said in a statement, adding it was "deeply concerned" by events in the Zimbabwean capital.

This comes after the army opened fire in central Harare during demonstrations over alleged fraud in the country's elections. You've got to sift through them and decide whether or not we actually agree with the tally that's been done. "If they cheat us, they will have to kill us on the streets".

Of the 201 seats up for grabs in Zimbabwe's parliament, 58 seats are yet to be declared, putting victory out of reach for MDC leader Nelson Chamisa.

This set the stage for President Emmerson Mnangagwa's victory.

MDC officials claimed that the results of yesterday's vote, the first even conducted in Zimbabwe without former dictator Robert Mugabe on the ballot, was being deliberately delayed by authorities. We've more votes than ED. "We won the popular vote & will defend it!"

The Zimbabwean Electoral Commission (ZEC) was announcing results of the poll.

Both the European Union and United States observer missions urged the release of the presidential results as soon as possible.

Chief Observer Elmar Brok told the media on Wednesday that delays in announcing the results threaten the credibility of the elections. Its population of 13 million is struggling amid shortages of foreign currency, unemployment above 80% and lack of foreign investment.

Opposition supporters clogged the streets of Zimbabwe's capital Wednesday as the country awaited the results of the first leadership election since the end of Robert Mugabe's strongman rule a year ago.

Chamisa's MDC won in most urban centres, where it enjoys majority support.
