Commonwealth condemns 'excessive' force by Zimbabwe soldiers

Zimbabwe president closes in on victory as results roll

Soldiers fired on demonstrators during MDC protests in downtown Harare, AFP witnesses saw, with one man killed after being shot in the stomach.

Global observers from the Commonwealth and elsewhere are urging the release of the presidential results as soon as possible.

Mnangagwa was allegedly involved in violence and intimidation during the 2008 elections when then opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai pulled out of the run-off after attacks claimed the lives of at least 200 of his supporters.

The ZANU-PF party of Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has claimed a majority of seats in parliament, according to official results announced Wednesday.

Protests by MDC Alliance supporters in the city centre took an ugly turn by the afternoon.

As the tension between police and protesters ramped up on Wednesday, the authorities deployed the military to the streets, who used live rounds to quell the unrest.

Armoured personnel carriers ferried troops and riot police to the scene.

Automatic gunfire has also been heard and an army helicopter has been spotted in the skies.

THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) says it has not received any official complaints from parties and candidates who contested the country's election on Monday as it also announced official results will start trickling in around 3pm this Tuesday.

"I was making a peaceful protest".

"This is our government".

The crowds chanted: "We want Chamisa".

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has five days from Monday's election to release them. A spokesperson says that "we are seriously meant to wonder that this means". Why are the army here beating us?

This is the first time in 16 years that the government has allowed European Union and USA election monitors into the country.

"You said you were better than Mugabe you are the picture of Mugabe", shouted one young male protester wearing a white T-shirt.

Police officers stand guard at the ZANU-PF party headquarters in Harare, Zimbabwe, on August 1, 2018.

More 58 constituencies are yet to be declared, but ZANU-PF only needs 140 seats to the garner the 2/3 majority in Parliament.

Chamisa made it clear in the build up to the polls that he would not accept defeat and accused the ZEC of being in cahoots with ZANU-PF to have the outcome in their favour. We've more votes than ED.

Priscilla Chigumba, a judge who heads the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, said she was confident there had been no "cheating" in the first election without Mugabe on the ballot.

The EU assessment is critical in determining whether Zimbabwe can fix its image and attract the foreign investors needed for an economic revival.

She said "the presidential results should be announced as quickly as possible to bring confidence in the elections back to the people".

In Harare, the contrast could not be stronger with November, when hundreds of thousands filled the streets, hugging soldiers and celebrating their role in ousting 94-year-old Mugabe, the only leader Zimbabwe had known since independence in 1980.

Its population of 13 million is struggling amid shortages of foreign currency, unemployment above 80% and lack of foreign investment.
