Remains from North Korea 'consistent with being Americans'

WATCH: US welcomes home possible 'forgotten war' remains

"The ongoing correspondence between the two leaders is aimed at following up on their meeting in Singapore and advancing the commitments made in the US-DPRK join statement", said Sanders in a statement on Thursday.

"A letter to President Trump from Chairman Kim was received on August 1", said White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders.

"We have remains that look to have been in a state of preservation consistent with coming from the Korean War era", he said, and materials provided with the remains included USA -issued military equipment such as canteens and buttons.

"I am not at all surprised that you took this kind action", Trump wrote.

"We have responded to Chairman Kim's letter, the president has".

Pence, in his address at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii, said he trusted that Americans killed in the war were among the flag-draped cases flown to Hawaii on Wednesday.

However, Air Force General John Hyten, who commands the US Strategic Command, pointed out that North Korea has not launched any missiles since November.

The president also suggested in a tweet Thursday that he and Kim may meet again after the two leaders' summit in Singapore earlier this year, writing, "l look forward to seeing you soon!"

North Korea delivered only one identification tag among the 55 caskets sent home on July 27.

The United States has sent North Korea $22 million since 1990 as it recovered an estimated 629 sets of remains, according to a spokesman for the USA military.

More than 35,000 Americans died on the Korean Peninsula and 7,702 are still unaccounted for, according to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

He said samples from the remains would be sent to the Armed Forces Identification Laboratories at Dover Air Force Base in DE to begin the DNA process. The day of the transfer coincided with the 65th anniversary of the 1953 armistice agreement that put a temporary stop to the war between the North and South.

The U.S. military flew the remains from Osan Air Base in South Korea after they had undergone an initial field forensic review. The two sides remain technically at war because a peace treaty was never signed.

Experts say positively identifying the decades-old remains could take anywhere from days to decades.

While North Korea at times has unilaterally handed over boxes of remains, as the country did this week, more fruitful in the eyes of USA officials have been joint efforts to find and recover remains with American personnel on the ground.

Trump hailed the Singapore summit as a success and even went as far as saying that North Korea no longer posed a nuclear threat, but questions have been mounting about Pyongyang's willingness to give up its weapons programs.

"Where we have matches - compelling matches with DNA, we will get a very strong lead and be able to pursue identifications quickly", said Byrd.
