Meyer, who has won three national titles, was placed on paid administrative leave Wednesday after the disclosure of domestic abuse by Courtney Smith, the former wife of one-time Ohio State assistant Zach Smith, who was sacked last month.

When Meyer was asked about the protection order filed against Smith, the coach said the firing decision had "a little bit" to do with that and that it was a "group effort" to come to that decision. "This allows the team to conduct training camp with minimal distraction".

Co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day has been named acting head coach. However, on Monday Courtney Smith told college football reporter Brett McMurphy that Urban Meyer did know about the domestic violence.

For Meyer, the handling of former Buckeyes assistant Zach Smith is simply the latest episode in a disturbing pattern of playing dumb, even while keeping track of such minute details as a player's heart rate at practice. Courtney Smith also provided threatening texts she claims came from her ex-husband, former assistant Zach Smith.

Buckeyes alumni weren't all supportive of Meyer, however.

Smith was sacked July 23 after reports surfaced that his ex-wife filed an order of protection against him.

Bringing in outsiders could potentially impact the timeline of the university making a decision on Meyer's future, as they will have less working knowledge of the infrastructure and reporting lines at Ohio State.

"I don't know if I was the first, but I know I was one coach who told the players up front: 'If you ever hit a girl or get any sort of domestic violence charge or sexual charge then you're finished.' " Spurrier said.

Of course, there could be more factors in play than just whether Stoops wants to coach again, including whether athletics director Gene Smith gets caught up in the controversy.

Zach Smith was charged in May with misdemeanor criminal trespass. "I know nothing about it".

But McMurphy argued that according to text messages, an interview with Courtney Smith, and pictures of the reported abuse, Meyer knew about the alleged 2015 domestic violence incidents. "I'm not sure where that comes up".
