United States says Russian Federation still carrying out 'pervasive' election meddling

U.S. President Donald Trump boards Air Force One for travel to Atlanta from Joint Base Andrews

U.S. Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and FBI Director Christopher Wray participate in a briefing on election security in the White House press briefing room at the White House in Washington, U.S., August 2, 2018.

During Thursday's White House press briefing, National Intelligence Director Dan Coats said his agency is meeting weekly with other agencies ahead of November's midterms.

Mr Coats said the efforts were less robust so far than in 2016, and did not appear directed at a single party. Meddle or not, though, Russian Federation isn't thrilled by how it all turned out, the US President told the rally.

But Coats, Bolton, FBI Director Christopher Wray, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and the director of the National Security Agency, Paul Nakasone, said Russian Federation was to blame, along with other foreign actors.

Just one day into the trial of his former campaign chief Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to demand Attorney General Jeff Sessions immediately pull the plug on Robert Mueller's Russian election-tamper probe. Mr. Trump has complained bitterly about Sessions' decision to recuse himself, and he has said he would not have named Sessions attorney general had he known that Sessions would step away from the probe.

"This includes measures to heighten the security and resilience of election systems and processes, to confront Russian and other foreign malign influence in the United States, to confront such aggression through global action, and to reinforce a strong sanctions regime".

The press briefing comes amidst a flurry of activity by the Trump administration, federal investigators and the tech industry concerning Russian efforts to influence U.S. elections. "It is ongoing with the intent to achieve their intent and that is drive a wedge and undermine our democratic values", Coats said.

"Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy, and it has become clear that they are the target of our adversaries who seek to sow discord and undermine our way of life", DHS Director Kirstjen Nielsen said from the White House.

President Donald Trump was strongly criticised last month for not condemning alleged Russian actions, while he was in Helsinki.

And Thursday's briefing came on the third day of the trial of Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager who used to work for pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine and has been charged with tax and bank fraud on some of those earnings.

The officials all said that Russian Federation is engaged in continued efforts to meddle in United States elections with influence and misinformation campaigns, but emphasized that it's not yet at the scale that USA intelligence agencies saw in the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election. "This is a threat we need to take extremely seriously".

'We're looking into everything we can to protect the 2018 elections, the integrity of those elections and moving on beyond 2018 to 2020 and after, ' Sanders said.
