President Changes Story About Trump Tower Meeting

Trump fears his son may have inadvertently gotten into legal trouble report

On Sunday, US media including the Washington Post, CNN and AP reported that Mr Trump was anxious Donald Trump Jr could be in legal trouble because of the 9 June 2016 meeting with Ms Veselnitskaya.

Trump Jr. initially claimed in a statement - which the president dictated himself - that he had "primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children" during the "short introductory meeting".

He repeated that he had not known about the meeting in advance.

According to the Washington Post, a White House advisor, speaking on the condition of anonymity, has stated that President Trump has told friends and fellow advisors that he is fearful that his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., may have put himself in legal jeopardy.

Most recently, Trump tweeted about the meeting Sunday, saying it was meant "to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics". The surprising claim in Trump's tweet is that it is legal for a campaign to get information from a foreign entity about a political opponent. USA intelligence made that assessment public in an October 7 statement. Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied his government interfered.

In addition to weighing in publicly on the Trump Tower meeting, the president also unleashed angry tweets directed at the news media Sunday morning from his 11-day working vacation in Bedminster, New Jersey.

Schiff said he believes congressional investigators found evidence of conspiracy and collusion by the Trump campaign, including Trump Jr.'s meeting with the Russian attorney at Trump Tower.

"If I ask Donald a question, 'What time is it?' He would probably tell me how to build a clock", the lawyer explained.

When the meeting first became public knowledge previous year, Trump personally dictated a statement for public release claiming that the meeting was called to discuss resuming adoptions of orphaned Russian babies by United States citizens.

As Think Progress researchers found, the offer of campaign aid from Moscow was not the first time that the Kremlin offered to help a United States presidential candidate. "You have to look at what laws, rules, statutes were really broken here". There have been no reports that information about Clinton was offered or exchanged.

Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci and former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon have suggested that Trump, at a minimum, knew of the meeting soon after it took place.

Sekulow said the important thing was that Trump's legal team shared accurate information with the special counsel. Trump has seethed against what he feels are trumped-up charges against his former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, whose trial began last week and provided a visible reminder of Mueller's work. Mueller was appointed to take over the probe after the firing.

Mueller is examining whether Trump obstructed the investigation of Russia's role in the 2016 election.

Sekulow's vow comes as another member of the president's legal team - Rudy Giuliani - said negotiations on Trump sitting down with Mueller's team are wrapping.

Trump's days of private anger spilled out into public with the Twitter outburst, which comes at a perilous time for the president.
