Steven Seagal named Russian special envoy to US

Seagal takes credit U.S.-Russia meeting

The two countries are also at odds over Syria and Ukraine.

Seagal has been a regular visitor to Russia for years, and Putin granted the American actor a Russian passport in 2016. However, things have really only gotten worse since then.

According to the ministry, Seagal's role is described as being akin to when "people's diplomacy meets halfway traditional diplomacy", comparing the role as that of a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador.

In 2014, Seagal posted a statement on his website to clarify that he had been misquoted by media outlets saying he called Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, the world's greatest leader.

The Flight of Fury star, still popular with Russian audiences, has recently defended the Russian government over claims that it meddled in 2016 USA elections. Seagal has said that it's "stupid" to think that Russian Federation or any other country has the technology to tamper with voting.

On Saturday, Russian officials tapped him for another role: special representative to improve relations between the United States and Russia.

The 66-year-old actor is also among the Hollywood figures accused of sexual misconduct during the "Me Too" campaign.

He called Putin a personal friend and expressed a desire to improve relations between the United States and Russian Federation.

Long before Seagal and Putin became buds, the dual citizen tried in jest to influence the Russian president's reputation overseas. He had this to say.

"Steven Seagal was appointed as the Russian Foreign Ministry's special representative for Russian-US humanitarian ties", the ministry said. "I take this honour very seriously", he wrote on Twitter.

President Donald Trump has been criticized for his reluctance to speak out against Russian Federation or President Vladimir Putin, and the addition to Steven Seagal into the mix isn't going to help matters. "The task is to facilitate relations between Russian Federation and the United States in the humanitarian field, including cooperation in culture, arts, public and youth exchanges, and so on".
