Meeting in Trump Tower Was to Get Information on Clinton

Trump actually admits meeting with Russians was to get dirt on Hillary Clinton

President Trump's other claim in his Sunday tweet - that he did not know about the Trump Tower meeting with the Russians - may also be exposed as a lie. This is not a routine thing politicians do to get information on their opponents. "So if someone from another country says, 'I want to have a meeting where I'm going to give your campaign $1 million dollars, ' and you know that's illegal and you try to make it happen, the crime has been committed then, even if the $1 million dollars never appears in the campaign's treasury".

Until now Mr Trump had claimed that Donald Jr met Natalia Veselnitskaya and other Kremlin lobbyists at Trump Tower in June 2016 to discuss adoptions.

Trump's critics immediately pounced on the new story, the latest of several versions of events about a meeting for which emails were discovered between the president's eldest son and an intermediary from the Russian government offering damaging information about Trump's opponent, Hillary Clinton.

Donald Trump Jr's phone line disconnected on conservative radio host Laura Ingraham's show on Monday just as she was asking him about his Trump Tower meeting with Russians.

He later admitted he accepted the meeting with Veselnitskaya in hopes of obtaining damaging information on Clinton, but said nothing came of it.

Any legal battle over whether the president can be compelled to testify could go all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, the lawyer, Jay Sekulow, said on ABC's "This Week".

"I wasn't involved in the statement drafting at all, nor was the President", Sekulow said on July 12, 2017.

This was initially denied by Mr Trump's team, but his lawyers later confirmed that he had in fact dictated his son's statement.

News of the meeting, which Mr Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and top campaign official Paul Manafort also attended, broke in July past year.

This is something Trump has said regularly about the Trump Tower meeting, and something he has re-upped now that Michael Cohen is reportedly telling people that Trump did know about it.

Talks between Trump's lawyers and the special counsel investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election have restarted in recent days, and it is not clear a deal will be struck, The Associated Press reported.

How Could The Trump Tower Meeting Have Violated The Law?

Trump's tweet was a "pretty remarkable shifting of explanations about this meeting", Stephanopoulos pointed out.

The Trump administration has previously stated the meeting was about a fight over allowing USA families to adopt children from Russian Federation.

Ingraham went on speaking before Trump Jr eventually called back, saying: 'Somehow you got cut off - they started playing the recording and then it got cut off'.

One of the president's personal lawyers said on Sunday that if Trump is subpoenaed by the special counsel, his lawyers will attempt to quash it in court.

Lawyers described the statement as "short but accurate", according to The Post.

"The question is how would it be illegal?" "That arguably would violate federal law prohibiting a candidate from asking for or receiving something of value from a foreign national".

"We have to make a decision based on the law and what's best for our client", said Sekulow, adding that it will take time to make that determination.
