Trump says Republicans should run on his record

Editorial cartoons on economy

Trump swung by the area Saturday night to rally Republicans behind Balderson, highlighting the country's strong economic growth since Trump was elected.

President Trump is arguing that Republicans can keep control of Congress by casting the midterms as a referendum on himself. "He said, 'Well, I don't have anything to do with it'".

But with House Speaker Paul Ryan, Vice President Mike Pence, and even President Trump showing up in Ohio's 12th Congressional District in recent days, it's obvious that Republicans are very concerned about losing Tuesday's special election, the last before voters head to the polls in November. Troy Balderson is vying for an open House seat in central OH against Democrat Danny O'Connor, a county official.

Trump tweeted late Friday that James was interviewed "by the dumbest man on television", CNN anchor Don Lemon, but that he "made Lebron look smart, which isn't easy to do". The attack on James, who has been critical of Trump, came just as the National Basketball Association superstar opened up a school for underprivileged children. He derided Waters, who is black, as "an extremely low IQ person". And he basked in cheers as the crowd chanted the campaign staple rallying cry, "Build the wall, build the wall". Kasich said Balderson told him, "Well, I don't have anything to do with it". Earlier this afternoon, Trump called for Ohioans to re-elect U.S. Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Upper Arlington) in the special U.S. House election next Tuesday.

John Kasich, a Republican critic of President Trump, said a special election in his state that should be a "slam dunk" for the GOP is instead close, which "doesn't bode well" for his party. He also touted his tariff policies and some approval numbers.

He also brought on-stage Freedom Caucus member and Ohio Representative Jim Jordan, who praised the president on his leadership and accomplishments, amid cheers from the crowd saying "speaker of the house".
