Star witness ends testimony in fraud trial of ex-Trump campaign chief

Paul Manafort's associate says 'hundreds' of emails prove former Trump campaign chief directed fraud

In general, references to Trump at the trial have been few and far between. That's when they reminded the judge that they had already discussed this and thought he had given Welch permission to sit in on testimony.

Under questioning by prosecutor Greg Andres, Gates walked the six-man, six-woman jury through the foreign bank accounts used by Manafort to receive payments from Ukrainian politicians - money that was not reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Gates pleaded guilty to reduced charges in February and agreed to cooperate with the government.

At times, Ellis has also sided against the defense team, such as when he didn't require former Manafort deputy Rick Gates to answer a question on Wednesday about whether he had four extramarital affairs, not just the one he disclosed the day before.

Prosecutors relied on Gates to provide first-hand support of the accusations against Manafort.

Magionos said she reviewed documents spanning from 2010 to 2014 from the Bank of Cyprus, Hellenic Bank, Royal Bank and HSBC Group AG accounts in the United Kingdom.

More recently, after the launch of the Mueller investigation but before his plea bargain, Gates lied to the FBI about a meeting between Manafort and an unnamed US Congressman regarding a "specific issue".

The remaining witnesses include bankers and others familiar with Manafort's real estate portfolio and debts, and they're expected to dive into the gritty details of the prosecution's case on bank and mortgage fraud. Trump often boasts that he hires "the best people", and the sixth day of the trial showcased two people who worked for him, one who allegedly tried to use his influence in Trump's circle to boost someone he had a sketchy financial relationship with, and another who admitted under oath that he may have stolen money from Trump's inaugural committee.

Mr Manafort and Mr Gates were the first people indicted in Mr Mueller's investigation into potential ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Gates appeared to be referring to his decision to enter into a plea agreement with the office of Special Counsel Robert Mueller in exchange for his trial testimony.

The Reagan appointee has grumbled incessantly about prosecutors' pace in presenting evidence and questioning its witnesses - even though Mueller's team expects to rest its case roughly a week and a half ahead of schedule. But Trump has shown interest in the proceedings, tweeting support for Manafort and suggesting he has been treated worse than gangster Al Capone. Instead, prosecutors for Mueller have accuse Manafort of hiding at least $30 million that he earned while representing Russia's neighboring country of Ukraine and its president, Viktor Yanukovych, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"The jury is very sensitive to what it perceives, correctly or not, to be the judge's view of the case", Gillers said.

The testimony, stretching across three days, created an extraordinary courtroom showdown between the two former Trump campaign aides who were indicted together.

The defense team for Paul Manafort, including Kevin Downing, front left, and Thomas Zehnle, front right, arrived at federal court for the continuation of the trial of the former Trump campaign chairman, in Alexandria, Va., Wednesday. Courtroom illustration courtesy of Bill Hennessy.

Gates also admitted, however, that the same tricks he used to help doctor and falsify records for Manafort he also deployed for his own personal gain in order to covertly wire funds out of Manafort's offshore accounts to line his own pockets.

While Gates and others have pleaded guilty, Manafort has refused to strike a deal and legal experts say he may be holding out hopes of a pardon from Trump.

Gates said he falsely labeled hundreds of thousands of dollars in income as loans to reduce Manafort's tax liability.
