Authorities said all the tourists who wanted to be evacuated from three outlying vacation islands due to power blackouts and damage to hotels had left by boat, some 5,000 people in all.

The devastation comes exactly a week after the region was hit by a 6.4 magnitude quake that left at least 15 people dead and 162 injured.

"We remember your people in our thoughts and our prayers".

Soldiers have pulled a man alive from the rubble of a large mosque that collapsed in northern Lombok during Sunday night's powerful natural disaster.

The Sun newspaper quoted a source as saying: "They certainly felt the quake". An interagency meeting will be held Thursday to compare information, Nugroho said.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because of its location on the "Ring of Fire", an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

In a press conference, the spokesperson for the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho went on to say that another 1,467 people were admitted to hospitals owing to the injuries they sustained in the Sunday quake.

So far, up to 2,700 tourists have been moved from the Gili Island.

Saffron Amis, a British student on Gili Trawangan - the largest of the islands that are fringed by white beaches and surrounded by turquoise sea - said there were at least 200 people stranded there and others were still arriving from the other two, Gili Air and Gili Meno.

Rescue teams on Tuesday also continued searching under debris from collapsing buildings for more survivors, reports Efe news.

Rescuers heard a weak voice coming from under the wreckage of a nearby two-storey mosque, where four people were believed to have been trapped when the building pancaked. "We are waiting for heavier equipment", Teddy Aditya, an official of the Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), told Reuters.

The BNPB said more than 20,000 people had been displaced by the quake as it brought down or damaged some 13,000 houses, and many of those were living in open areas in need of food, medicine and other aid. "Where should we go if we have no house anymore, nowhere to live?" said the mother of 15- and 9-year-old girls. "We don't get anything", he said as he tried to retrieve documents from the remains of his home. It said clean drinking water was scarce because of a recent spell of extremely dry weather in Lombok.

Food and medical supplies were being distributed from vehicles.
