A 48-year-old Fredericton man is facing four counts of first-degree murder in connection with Friday morning's shooting that left four people dead, including two police officers.

Fredericton police has said that the Red Cross and the city have found lodging for 50 residents of the apartment complex who have been unable to return to their homes.

The local health authority says Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional hospital is now treating multiple victims of today's shooting.

"I'm very torn up", he said. Authorities are waiting for family members to be notified before releasing their names. They have not said whether he knew any of the deceased.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement on the shooting, praising first responders and mourning the slain officers in Fredericton.

He said the apartment complex has four buildings in a square, and it sounded like the shots were coming from the middle of the complex.

"I just woke up and heard gunshots and I looked outside my window".

"You hear a lot about gun violence in the United States", he said, "but this morning when I heard those noises, what's starting to sink in is that those noises were people losing their lives".

A large group of Fredericton police officers gathered early this afternoon outside the Chalmers hospital, and appeared to be consoling each other.

Police said the area would be blocked off for the foreseeable future as "the investigation is ongoing".

Flowers, teddy bears and messages of support are piling up outside the police station in Fredericton. "Thank you for ALL that you do!".

Across the country, many police forces have lowered their flags to half-mast to pay tribute to their two comrades who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale told reporters the RCMP were assisting Fredericton authorities in the investigation.

Police declared the threat to the neighbourhood over at about 11 a.m.

"We were looking forward to building years with just the two of us", she said.

"Please appreciate this is a hard time for their families and our colleagues", the force tweeted, adding that more information would be released when they're able.

New Brunswick Premier Brian Gallant tweeted his condolences to the victims and their families.

"This tragic event reminds us of the lengths first responders regularly go to in responding to the needs of New Brunswickers".

"The people of Fredericton are courageous, strong, and resilient".

Police had earlier advised residents in the area to stay indoors, lock down their homes and not reveal their location or the location of police officers on social media.

On Friday evening, about 100 local residents packed into St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church for a vigil for the victims.

The quiet residential neighbourhood, dominated by houses, grocery stores, a church and an elementary school, is the last place Hrubeniuk said he expected to encounter a unsafe situation.

The province also dealt with a multiple shooting June 4, 2014, when five RCMP officers were shot in Moncton.

Gun-related murders in Canada in 2016 were up 23% on 2015.
