Hamilton triumphs in Italian GP as Ferrari flounder

Italy Grand Prix Sebastian Vettel

The Briton and Sebastian Vettel, his closest title rival now 30 points behind, collided on the opening lap with the German Ferrari driver sent spinning down to 18th place before recovering to fourth.

Ferrari's hopes of a first Monza win in eight years were dashed by Lewis Hamilton, who overtook both Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen to claim a famous win at the home of Mercedes' greatest rivals.

It was a tough stage for Hamilton with the Monza crowd of over 100,000 fans all decked out in the red of Ferrari but the Mercedes driver showed champion's credentials.

Vettel spun in a lap-one clash with Hamilton and although he raced back through the field with a damaged auto to fourth, he slipped 30 points behind the Englishman with seven races to go.

Vettel was at his commanding best seven days ago to win in Belgium, but he was on the back foot from the start here after his critical collision with Hamilton.

Bottas said: "I was really trying to do everything I can to get to the podium - as a team, we take this result".

"We woke up to torrential rain this morning, which meant it was a less busy first session than normal", said Hamilton.

Vettel had to pit for a new front wing and then fought through to fifth on the road, before gaining another place via a penalty for Max Verstappen. "I think we all got off to similar starts and then I got a bit of wheelspin, and then went into Turn 1".

"I think Lewis obviously saw a little bit around the outside".

"I asked during the race how the pace was compared to others and I was struggling a little bit in the beginning with the traffic, it was quite messy, but then our pace was decent given the damage". We have to deliver results like this more often.

The race stewards investigated and ruled the crash a normal "racing incident" that merited no further action. "But I'm not entirely happy with the end of my qualifying and that's the emotion that's dominating at the moment".

The championship leader put Vettel under pressure immediately but Vettel pulled clear and was alongside Raikkonen into the first corner. However, he said that he's "not too worried" about the championship situation. "We did a few laps but after that it was like having a day in the office when you don't have too much work to do - I was even snoozing in the vehicle at one point! "

"It is very, very easy to allow it to get to you, to allow it to have an impact on your life and have you think about it, all these different things". We know we have a very strong auto, which was clearly demonstrated by the fact we monopolised the front row of the grid.
