'Beyond our protocol': Umpire who gave Kyrgios pep talk will be monitored

All the records that Roger Federer could break by winning US Open

Didn't move while so-so serves flew by for aces.

Paire smashed his racquet, argued with the umpire and produced 11 double faults as Federer came through 7-5 6-4 6-4.

The crowd began booing.

"I want to help you, I want to help you", Lahyani was overheard telling Kyrgios.

Umpire Mohamed Lahyani went "beyond protocol" in trying to help Nick Kyrgios but will continue to officiate at the US Open, tournament organisers have announced.

Australian Nick Kyrgios had lost 3-0 to, Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the second set of their match at Flushing Meadows, but battled back to defeat the Frenchman after the Umpire 's weird intervention.

However, Lahyani, a well-experienced umpire on men's ATP Tour and Grand Slam circuit, escaped any sanction and will be allowed to continue officiating at Flushing Meadows because of his "exemplary track record as an global tennis official", a United States Tennis Association spokesman said.

"If he makes a mistake, I think he should be also punished. He's an umpire, and he should stay on his chair for that".

Kyrgios also said that he does not believe Lahyani deserves a punishment and that chair umpires in Shanghai and Cincinnati did this as well when Kyrgios was acting up.

The USTA released a statement from the tournament referee that described what happened between Lahyani and Kygrios.

"I'm here to do something I've never done in 40 years in tennis, I'm going to defend this umpire", McEnroe said on ESPN. Of course he wasn't coaching me.

"The umpire doesn't have to talk to him at all, the only thing he can tell him is, "pay attention because if you continue like this I'm going to give you a warning", something like this". I didn't listen to what they said.

Kyrgios was grilled in his press conference but was quick to downplay any influence from the umpire: "I'm not sure it was encouragement. He just said that it wasn't a good look". I wasn't feeling good. I don't know what he said, I don't care what he said.

"I don t know what he said".

There was nothing fun about Kyrgios's controversial talking to from chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani during his second-round win over Pierre-Hugues Herbert, with both player and official lambasted for the incident.

Totally revitalised, Kyrgios dropped just three games in the final two sets, sealing victory after two hours and 47 minutes.

What there's never been a doubt about, however, is Kyrgios' talent and ability to entertain - when he puts his mind to it.

Second seed and five-time champion Federer, 37, made it 18 wins in 18 second round appearances in NY by seeing off error-plagued Frenchman Benoit Paire 7-5, 6-4, 6-4.

Normally, a chair umpire leans over from his or her post to speak to a seated player during a changeover.

He said: "I don't know what to think".

"I want to help you". He was there for too long.

"It's a conversation. Conversations can change your mindset. He behaves the way he behaves", said Federer.

"Again, I understand as well why people are speculating that should not happen". Not even that I lost, but just game-wise.
