Former Arizona Senator Jon Kyl named as John McCain's replacement

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, R, will appoint former Sen.

The governor said Kyl, a Republican, will serve through at least the current congressional term, though it's unclear if he'll serve through 2020, when there's expected to be a special election for the last two years of McCain's term.

Both Meghan McCain and her mother, Cindy, tweeted their support for Kyl, who they described as a friend of the family and a statesman who is well-suited to take up McCain's mantle in the Senate.

"It's a great tribute to John that he is prepared to go back into public service to help the state of Arizona", she said. At a news conference where he was introduced as McCain's replacement, Kyl said he's only met Trump once, though he noted he is working for the White House by serving as Kavanaugh's so-called "sherpa". Though Kyl accepted the appointment, he will not seek election in 2020 nor did he agree to serve out the full remainder of the term. State law prescribes how a vacant seat in Congress is filled after a death, resignation or expulsion. The seat will come up again for a six-year term in 2022.

Kyl, an experienced foreign policy hand, will be entering a narrowly divided Senate where Republicans could gain or lose seats in November. Every single day that Jon Kyl represents #Arizona in the U.S. Senate is a day our state is well-served.

That vote could be crucial for Republicans hoping to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. "But I think there's a happy medium", Kyl said.

McCain had been absent from the Senate since December as he underwent cancer treatment.

Kyl, a lobbyist, dismissed the idea that his work will impede his ability to serve in the Senate.

President Donald Trump tweeted: "Jon Kyl will be an extraordinary senator representing an extraordinary state, Arizona". John Shadegg and Matt Salmon, and former Arizona attorney general Grant Woods.

His appointment now allows him to vote for the nomination.
