Newt Gingrich Defends Trump From Woodward: Look, FDR ‘Routinely Lied to Everybody’

Bob Woodward's new book has chief of staff John Kelly calling President Trump an'idiot who has'gone off the rails

According to the book, former chief economic adviser Gary Cohn realized Trump might sign a letter withdrawing the US from our trade agreement with South Korea - limiting our ability to keep tabs on North Korea's missile launches.

According to the book, sources told Woodward that White House Chief of Staff John Kelly regularly lost his temper with Trump, calling him "unhinged" and "an idiot", the Washington Post reported.

Fear: Trump in the White House - by famed Watergate reporter Bob Woodward - also details his rants.

However, according to White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, the entire book is nothing more than a bunch of "fabricated stories" told by "disgruntled" former employees to make the president "look bad".

"It's just nasty stuff", Trump said.

Trump has hit back in a series of tweets claiming that Woodward was working for the Democratic party and that publication of the book was timed to damage the Republicans in the midterm elections in November.

"I assume that means it's going to be a negative book", the president replies. "Maybe I wasn't given messages that he called", the president told the conservative news outlet.

Some of the most senior figures in Mr Trump's administration are quoted in the book disparaging the president's intellectual abilities.

He also claims that two of the people most close to the president, Chief of Staff John Kelly, as well as the Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, are sick and exhausted of Trump's behavior. He's gone off the rails. "This is the worst job I've ever had". For sheer degree of difficulty, it's the finest subject-changing knock on NeverTrumpers I've ever seen.

James Mattis, the United States defence secretary, is said to have been exasperated after trying to explain the importance of America's military presence in the Korean Peninsula, which allows a North Korean missile launch to be detected in seven seconds.

Mattis had to explain that the expenses in the region are meant to "avoid a Third World War" but it's implied Trump still didn't get it.

Mr Mattis is also quoted as saying Mr Trump had the understanding of "a fifth- or sixth-grader" - the age of 10 or 11 - in understanding foreign affairs. "In serving in this administration, the idea that I would show contempt for the elected Commander-in-Chief, President Trump, or tolerate disrespect to the office of the President from within our Department of Defense, is a product of someone's rich imagination", he said. He also repeated a previous comment criticising the "pathetic" attempt to "smear" those close to the president. We already knew, after a year-and-a-half of chronic leaks in Trump's Washington, that many in his circle didn't think highly of him and that he returned the favor.

Cohn later told an associate that Trump never noticed the letter was missing. "Got to protect the country".

The former adviser pulled a similar move over Mr Trump's plans to pull out of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the book claims. "I'll just take the paper off his desk'".

U.S. President Donald Trump is decrying quotes and stories in an incendiary book by journalist Bob Woodward as "frauds, a con on the public".

And in this one as well-according to the excerpts-the veteran investigative reporter breaks startling new ground on occasion, writing for example that Trump once sought to have Bashar al-Assad assassinated after the Syrian leader used chemical weapons on civilians in 2017.

"Let's go in. Let's kill the f--king lot of them", Trump said in one of the highlights of the 448-page book that was described in an article Tuesday in The Washington Post, where Woodward has long worked.
