Watch the moment Ayanna Pressley learned she won the primary race

Ten-term male Democrat falls to progressive black woman in Massachusetts primary

An African-American Boston city councilwoman ousted a 10-term congressman on Tuesday in a historic upset in the Democratic primary for a MA congressional seat.

With 46 percent of precincts reporting, Pressley led the 10-term incumbent 55 percent to 45 percent when The Associated Press called the race for Massachusetts' 7th District.

The Democratic nominating contest fight between US Representative Michael Capuano, 66, and Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley, 44, was his first since 1998.

Massachusetts' last Democratic primary upset came in 2014, when Seth Moulton defeated Rep. John Tierney in the state's 6th Congressional District. She is not facing a Republican in November. She joins a number of other black women who've won their primaries this year, including Stacey Abrams, who's running for governor in Georgia, Lauren Underwood, running for a congressional seat in IL, and Jahana Hayes, who's also running for a seat in Congress from CT. Pressley was endorsed by Ocasio-Cortez, and has been profiled in several news outlets.

There are no Republican candidates.

No Republican is on the ballot for the seventh congressional district race in November, so the Pressley will most likely be heading to Washington in 2019.

"This is not just about resisting and affronting Trump", Pressley said, per the Times.

She was raised by her single mother, Sandra Pressley, on the north side of Chicago while her father, Martin Pressley, battled addiction and spent much of her childhood in prison. "Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman", he said.

In a video posted by her close friend Jesse Mermell, Pressley stands up in seeming disbelief.

Pressley's win echoed that of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's over the long-time representative Joe Crowley in NY, and the ascent of Stacey Abrams in Georgia, who - if she wins - will become the first African-American female governor in USA history.

"Clearly the district wanted a lot of change", Mr Capuano told supporters on Tuesday as he conceded.

Rep. Stephen F. Lynch easily won his Democratic primary Tuesday in his bid for a ninth full term.

"I have been really furious about the constant charges being lobbed against me about identity politics that, by the way, are only lobbed against women and candidates of color", she said in one debate.

However, two other Massachusetts Democrats, Reps.
