Want to Know Who the Unnamed 'Gutless Loser' Is? White House Tells Americans to Call The New York Times

Trump himself followed up those denials by issuing a barrage of tweets condemning Woodward and the book as "discredited". On Capitol Hill, a confirmation hearing in a staid Senate office building is repeatedly interrupted by protesters shouting at the nominee and the senators; 70 people are arrested.

Pence said he did not know who wrote the Times column but that he was "100 percent confident that no one on the vice president's staff was involved in this anonymous editorial".

The article plays into anecdotes released Tuesday from reporter Bob Woodward's new book Fear, which alleges Trump's own staff has stolen important documents off his desk.

According to Woodward, the tweet was never sent out after backchannel communications with North Korea made clear that the nation would regard the move as a sign the United States was preparing to wage war on the North. He fired back on the op-ed on Wednesday, telling reporters the writer was "gutless" and reciting a laundry list of his administration's achievements.

"I think if you have a security clearance in the White House, I think it would be acceptable to use a lie detector test and ask people whether they are talking to the media against the policy of the White House", Paul reasoned.

U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested the opinion piece in the New York Times may be "treason" and is calling for the newspaper to identify its source.

The article written by a unidentified senior White House official in the New York Times, attacking the US President is causing quite a stir across the pond. The writer said Trump's behavior was a danger to the republic, impetuous, adversarial, unprincipled, and amoral. And quite frankly, if there was a person in the White House or the administration who wanted to tell me what's in that op-ed piece, I would say, 'Okay, name me who was there. Anyone can ring up and say anything they want. If it should be determined that this anonymous author had access to classified information while serving the president, he/she must be tried and imprisoned for their crime.

The White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, called on the "coward" who wrote the piece to "do the right thing and resign".

But Trump lambasted Woodward's account as a "phony story".

"It probably won't take long for us to find out who wrote it".

Trump, in fact, used the term "mentally retarded" during a 2004 appearance on "The Howard Stern Show" when discussing a conversation he had with an unnamed "golf pro" about how much he should make for hosting his NBC reality series, "The Apprentice".

Woodward on Sunday brushed off Trump's attacks. "The root of the problem is the president's amorality", anonymous opinion piece writes.
