"Coffee Boy" Papadopoulos Sentenced To 14 Days

Papadopoulos lawyers released a memo on Friday seeking a reduced jail sentence for their client lying to the FBI when interviewed in January 2017

Papadopoulos was the first former Trump aide arrested in the probe into an alleged Kremlin plot to influence the 2016 USA elections.

Lawyers for Papadopoulos contradicted that assertion.

The professor had reportedly not been in contact with prosecutors in Italy seeking to question him over allegations of financial wrongdoing and his fiancé told Business Insider earlier this year that she could not reach him.

Trump has denied knowing anything about contact with Russians and his campaign.

Russian Federation has continually denied allegations of interfering in the 2016 election.

US District Judge Randolph Moss on Friday sentenced Papadopoulos to 14 days, noting that he "lied in an investigation that was important to national security". "It was at best, begrudging efforts to cooperate".

He gave false statements about his contacts to the FBI, which the FBI said impeded their investigation into the extent that Russian meddling may have worked its way into the campaign. "I hope to have a second chance to redeem myself". Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who ran the Trump campaign foreign policy operation, has said he quickly rejected that idea when Papadopoulos raised it at a meeting in March 2016.

He and his wife left the courthouse without speaking to the press. "But there is no doubt in my mind that the judge issued what he thought was a very fair sentence".

"It's possible, yes", Mangiante Papadopoulos said. "I think the judge really took everything into consideration".

Prior to a campaign rally ahead of of Papadopoulos' sentencing, the president sought to distance himself from his one time campaign advisor.

Outside court on Friday, Papadopoulos' lawyer, Thomas Breen, said his client was a "fool" and had acted "stupidly" by lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He received a sentence of 30 days in prison and a $20,000 fine.

Also in court, his lawyer, Thomas Breen, criticized Mr. Trump for calling the Russian Federation probe fake news and a witch hunt.

While Papadopoulos's defense lawyer Thomas Breen, according to the Times and other reports, said in court on Friday that "Papadopoulos was loyal to the president", he also appealed for leniency, insisting that "Trump, by repeatedly attacking the investigation as not credible, was damaging it more than his client had". They met through Joseph Mifsud, a mysterious Maltese professor who is believed to be an operative for the Russian government and who attempted during the campaign to introduce George Papadopoulos to people purportedly connected to Russia.

"The message is for all of us to check our loyalty, to tell the truth, to help the good guys", Breen said.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents interviewed Papadopoulos in January 2017, and he lied about his April 2016 conversation with Joseph Mifsud, a Maltese professor working in London who had ties to Russian officials.

In addition, they said Papadopoulos did not provide "substantial assistance" and only came clean after he was confronted with his own emails, texts and other evidence.
