United States cop walks into apartment she thought was hers, kills man

Off-duty Texas police officer shoots man after mistaking apartment as her own

Texas Rangers investigators asked Dallas police to hold off on issuing a warrant for the officer who shot and killed a man at his apartment, according to Police Chief Renee Hall.

The unnamed officer wasn't hurt in the 10 p.m. shooting at the South Side Flats at 1210 S. Lamar St., just blocks from Dallas police headquarters in the Cedars.

After the officer shot Jean late on Thursday at the end of her work shift, she called emergency services and told responding officers that she thought she had entered her own apartment.

Dallas police identified the officer as Amber Guyger, a four-year veteran of the department assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division. Police said they are unsure what happened between the two but at some point, she fired her weapon and struck Jean. He described Jean as an "amazing individual" and said that "if the grand jury deems necessary, this officer should have to answer for her actions in a court of law in Dallas County".

"Right now, there are more questions than we have answers", Hall said.

After excelling in high school, she said, her son left the island about seven years ago to study accounting and management information systems at Harding University before he was offered the job in Dallas.

"At the very early stages of this investigation - initial indications were that they were what we consider circumstances of an officer-involved shooting". She said she spoke to Jean's sister to express condolences to the family.

Botham Jean is seen February 27, 2014. She told WBAP that she could not understand on the officer got inside the wrong unit.

He said CGID intends to write US Senators and Members of Congress from NY to push for a national review and reform of protocols on how and when law enforcement officers engage in the use of force.

The officer, who was not injured, will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Burke said Jean came to the United States to study accounting at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas.

The officer called 911, and Jean was taken to a hospital where he later died. According to reports, the cop shot the man inside HIS apartment because she supposedly though he was in HER apartment.

Police called the situation "very unique".

Journalist and social media activist Shaun King tweeted Friday afternoon about what police said led to the shooting.

"We have ceased handling (the incident) under our normal officer-involved shooting protocol", the chief said, adding that the officer's blood was being tested for drugs and alcohol.

"This is a bad tragedy", Jean's employer said. "Botham Jean was a member of the PwC family in our Dallas office and we are simply heartbroken to hear of his death", the company said in a statement.

"I still don't believe he's gone, but we have to accept it", Brandt said in a phone interview.

"We have reassured them that we are working diligently and that we have invited an outside agency to investigate this", she said.
