Amazon's Bezos comments on Trump criticism

Sources News reports and announcements

The move catapults the world's richest person into a rarefied group of billionaire megadonors at a time when his company, Amazon.com, faces growing scrutiny over its rising power and impact on the economy. The wealth that Bezos has amassed hasn't come without controversy, as many critics point to poor working conditions at his facilities while others say he doesn't do enough for the public good.

Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos says he will start a $2 billion charitable fund to help homeless families and open new preschools in low-income neighborhoods.

"If our own great-grandchildren don't have lives better than ours, something has gone very wrong", Bezos wrote on Twitter announcing the fund.

Some resorted to the same argument as US President Donald Trump, who has attacked Amazon for not paying enough taxes and using US postal office as its "delivery boy".

Mr Bezos - reportedly worth more than $164bn - has faced criticism for not doing more philanthropic work. And Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has held Bezos up as an example of a leader of a company that does not pay its workers enough.

Discussing the preschools he would be funding, Bezos said he would focus on children the way Amazon does its customers. "Most important of those will be genuine, intense customer obsession".

The other component, called the "Day 1 Academies Fund," will create "and operate a network of high-quality, full-scholarship, Montessori-inspired preschools in underserved communities", Bezos said.

The initiative will be called the Bezos Day One Fund, borrowing from Amazon's corporate mantra to approach tasks with the initiative of a startup's first day.

Seattle, where Amazon has its headquarters, has been plagued by the rising number of homeless residents for the past several years.

More than a year ago, Bezos posted to Twitter a request for suggestions on philanthropic initiatives created to make a difference in the short term.

He cited his work at his space company, Blue Origin, and his investment, estimated now at $1 billion a year, "in the future of our planet and civilization through the development of foundational space infrastructure".

The Amazon chief's wealth has become problematic for some. But it's really unsafe to demonize the media. "But we're going to make a final pitch".

He added that "we live in a society where it's not just the laws of the land that protect us.it's also the social norms that protect us".

The announcement marks a deeper foray into philanthropy for Bezos, whose fortune has soared to more than $160 billion thanks to his stake in Amazon.
