Feinstein's opponent seizes on her role in Kavanaugh fight

Trump feels 'terribly' for Kavanaugh; Dems want FBI probe

Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who has accused supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, said the FBI should investigate her claims as a "first step" before she testifies in front of the Senate Judiciary committee.

The university professor in California, has accused Kavanaugh of assaulting her in 1982 when they were both high school students, allegations Kavanaugh has called "completely false".

In a letter to the committee's chairman, Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, Ford's attorneys said an FBI investigation needed to come first.

Lisa Banks, an attorney for Ford, told CNN her client was dealing with "hate mail, harassment, death threats" and that her immediate focus was protecting herself and her family.

"I support Senator Grassley's decision to have these 11th hour allegations thoroughly reviewed by the Senate Judiciary Committee, and weighed against Judge Kavanaugh's decades of public service, sterling record on the bench, outstanding personal reputation, and his unequivocal denial of the allegations", the Indianapolis Star quoted Braun as saying.

Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont echoed Blumenthal's comments in an interview with NPR, admitting an investigation may take a couple of weeks. How and why Ford went from wanting to preserve her anonymity to being willing to publicly talk about the incident isn't a process that should be chalked up simply to politics. McConnell knows that, even with one of the most favorable Senate maps any party ever has enjoyed, the antics of President Donald Trump have helped put the GOP's narrow, two-vote margin in jeopardy.

Trump blamed Democrats for the delay weeks before the US midterm congressional elections on November 6, but he said there was enough time to get his pick confirmed before the elections.

Committee Democrats quickly backed up the letter. She escaped when Kavanaugh's friend jumped on the bed, sending all three tumbling off.

"Compare that to the 22 witnesses at the 1991 Anita Hill hearing and it's impossible to take this process seriously", Feinstein said. "I have, however, referred the matter to federal investigative authorities", Feinstein said.

"Monday is her opportunity", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said yesterday, a line that was echoed by other Republicans throughout the day.

Kavanaugh and Ford have both been invited to testify before the committee next Monday.

There were other potential witnesses who came forward before the Hill-Thomas hearings, and then-Chairman Joe Biden declined to let them testify, something he now has said publicly he regrets.

Two former high school girlfriends of embattled Supreme Court Nominee Brett Kavanaugh are now coming to his defense.

Earlier on Tuesday, the New York Times reported that after Ford went public with her allegation, she moved out of her house and arranged for a private security detail after she received vulgar emails and messages on social media. However, the Department of Justice has said in regard to this topic that "the Federal Bureau of Investigation does not make any judgment about the credibility or significance of any allegation", so it is not clear that the Federal Bureau of Investigation would have the jurisdiction to get involved. He has denied the California college professor's accusation that he assaulted her at a party in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., when he was 17 and she was 15.

Cornyn's fellow Republicans have generally avoided criticizing Ford, instead castigating Democrats for not revealing her allegations earlier.

Trump said he feels "terribly" for Kavanaugh and the judge's wife and daughters, because they've been caught in the middle of a Democratic effort to "obstruct" his presidency.

"With years of hindsight, mounds of evidence of the prevalence and harm that sexual violence causes individuals and our institutions, as well as a Senate with more women than ever, "not getting it" isn't an option for our elected representatives", Hill wrote.
