Kim Jong Un wants 2nd meeting with Donald Trump, South Korea says

South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pose for

The two leaders made the announcement on the second day of a three-day summit, their third this year, as part of efforts with the United States to contain the threat of war on the Korean Peninsula. His Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday invited North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho to meet next week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in NY.

Trump said a recent letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un confirmed the positive track, which he said has seen the hardline communist country promise to halt its nuclear missile test program and mount a combined bid with South Korea for the 2032 Olympic Games.

Other agreements aimed at removing some longstanding irritants from their relations, such as allowing more contact between families divided by the Korean War.

"On the basis of these important commitments, the United States is prepared to engage immediately in negotiations to transform U.S. -DPRK relations", said Pompeo.

The day after the June 12 Trump-Kim summit, Pompeo said he hoped to achieve "major disarmament" by North Korea by the end of Trump's first term in January 2021.

It concluded with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Moon, and their wives, making a highly symbolic visit to Mount Baekdu, an active volcano near North Korea's border with China that is the mythic birthplace of all Korean people, and the purported birthplace of Kim's father. The 1950-53 war still technically continues because it ended with a cease-fire, not a peace treaty.

"The North has chose to permanently abolish the Tongchang-ri engine test site and missile launchers, with the attendance of experts from relevant countries".

According to reports, the Trump administration has insisted that North Korea take a unilateral, complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation, known as CVID.

And progress on freezing operations at Nyongbyon - which is probably not North Korea's only nuclear production site - remains contingent on the USA making concessions of its own, steps that could be politically unpalatable for many in Washington, including among hawks in Trump's own administration and in Congress.

Last year Mr Trump engaged in a war of rhetoric with Mr Kim in which he threatened to destroy North Korea.

"The North Koreans have always held out launches as their right as a sovereign nation".

"The peace treaty will be fulfilled as the final step of complete denuclearization".

Kim's has previously visited the mountain around major developments in North Korea, such as in late 2013 before he executed top officials including his uncle Jang Song-thaek, and after North Korea's fifth nuclear test in 2016, North Korea watchers say.

Jeong Seong-jang, a North Korea expert at the Sejong Institute, also noted that the United States and North Korea were still largely divided over denuclearisation. -South Korea joint live-fire military exercise, at a training field near the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas in Pocheon, South Korea, April 21, 2017.

It also was unclear what "corresponding steps" North Korea wants from the U.S.to dismantle its nuclear site. "Today the North and South chose to remove all threats that can cause war from the entire Korean peninsula".

However, their premier accord on the issue that most worries the world - the North's pursuit of nuclear-tipped missiles - contained a big condition: Kim stated that he would permanently dismantle North Korea's main nuclear facility only if the United States takes unspecified corresponding measures.

"I propose we move forward toward the big picture of peace in which the past 70-year-long hostility can be eradicated and we can become one again", he said, prompting rapturous applause. In this case, an attack from the United States against North Korea would then violate worldwide law.

Although Moon could have visited the summit sooner from the Chinese side, he had wanted to go by "stepping on our soil", Kim Eui-kyeom, a South Korean presidential spokesman, said at a briefing.

Moon was born in South Korea in 1953 during the Korean War.

Meanwhile, however, Moon and Kim made concrete moves of their own to reduce tensions on their border.

The young leader vowed to "write a new history between the North and South" from the top of Mount Paektu.
