The Oculus Quest Is Real: Facebook Promises £303 Standalone VR This Spring

The headset will go sale in spring 2019 for $399, complete with hand controllers to give people a sense of presence in virtual reality, Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said Wednesday at the Oculus Connect conference in San Jose, California. The Quest also features its own audio solution, with earphones embedded into the headstrap, providing 360° audio as you game.

Quest will be bundled together with a new Touch controller that looked nearly similar to existing Touch controllers for Rift. "This is the all-in-one VR experience that we have been waiting for". The headset also works without the need to connect it to a PC, which the current Oculus Rift requires. They are calling this Oculus Insight.

Since the Oculus Quest has six degrees of freedom, users can walk and duck and this is replicated in the game. The Go is meant to make good VR affordable, the Quest provides a standalone experience with high-quality Rift-like experiences and the Rift can connect to a PC for the highest-end experiences possible.

The Quest features the "same best-of-class optics as Oculus Go", and packs a resolution of 1,600 x 1,440 per eye. These sensors also allow Quest to go beyond roomscale, with Oculus saying it can go into a 4,000 square feet room.

Oculus Quest could be a game changer for VR; it does away with the need to set up external sensors around you to track movement.

Oculus promises that over 50 titles will be available for Quest when it launches, and VR fans can jump into the action for just $399, a price which appears to include two Oculus Touch controllers. However, we haven't yet had the opportunity to try out the Oculus Quest so we'll reserve judgement.

Why it matters: Oculus and Facebook have been trying for years to convince consumers that VR is the next big computing platform, but the market for the technology is still tiny.
