DOJ sues Calif. over new net neutrality bill

Gov. Jerry Brown speaks during an interview with The Associated Press in Sacramento Calif. California has become the first state to require publicly traded companies to include women on their boards of director

- A U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit could delay the rollout of California's toughest-in-the country net neutrality law, which is set to take effect January 1.

"Under the Constitution, states do not regulate interstate commerce - the federal government does", Atty.

According to the LA Times, California state AG Xavier Bacerra said the state is prepared to defend its new law, and that it would need additional funding and staff to implement the regulations.

Jerry Brown vetoed a bill on Sunday that would have mandated California public universities to provide abortion pills, The San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Advocates hope California's new law to stop internet providers from favoring certain content or websites will push Congress to enact national rules or encourage other states to create their own. The California Chamber of Commerce has said the policy will be hard for companies to implement and violates constitutional prohibitions against discrimination. This means that the California state government doesn't get to pass bills that conflict directly with the ones the federal government has passed.

The law gives California the nation's strongest net neutrality rules. Jerry Browns, but the Justice Department quickly filed a lawsuit to block its implementation.

Gigi Sohn, a former senior aide to FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, who ran the agency when the net neutrality rules were adopted, said the California law "is now the model for all future state and federal legislation. this is what internet users across the political spectrum have said they want by overwhelming majorities".

Oregon, Washington and Vermont have approved legislation related to net neutrality, but California's measure is seen as the most comprehensive attempt to codify the principle in a way that might survive a likely court challenge.

The law also requires companies to report their board composition to the California secretary of state and imposes a $100,000 fine if a company fails to do so.

The Obama administration had tried to force the same rules nationally, but the Trump administration's Federal Communications Commission overturned those rules in a decision that took effect in June.

"I favor a free and open internet as I think most consumers do, my concern is with the particular regulations the FCC adopted two years ago, my concern is that by imposing those heavy-handed economic regulations on internet service providers both big and small we could end up disincentivizing companies from wanting to build out internet access to a lot of parts of the country", stated Pai. California was the first and so Trump has ordered his minions to make an example of them. "California fought Trump and Sessions on their immigration lawsuit - California won - and California will fight this lawsuit as well", Wiener said in a statement.
