First SpaceX West Coast rocket landing lights up California sky

SpaceX SpaceX’s Falcon 9 Block 5 ready for first Return-To-Launch-Site booster landing

The Falcon 9 Block 5 lifted off at 10:21 p.m. From the perspective of a popular public viewing area a little over five miles from SpaceX's SLC-4 launch complex and LZ-4 landing zone, a period of maybe 30 seconds after S2 and S1 separated and ignited were marked by what looked exactly like the birth of a nebula. The company views ground-based rocket landings as better for expediting reuse, since drone ship landings require time to return to port.

Those near the base, which is near Lompoc, may be able to see quite a show as the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket burns its rocket engines to come to a gentle landing back at the air force base, officials said.

SpaceX has just successfully landed its first rocket on the U.S. West Coast.

Land landings aren't threatened by storms like ocean landings are, and they also allow SpaceX to refurbish the boosters faster, as they don't need to be recovered from sea.

From the ground, Twitter users posted incredible shots of the Falcon 9 coming back to Earth.

The launch of the satellite, SAOCOM 1A, is being conducted for Argentina's space agency.

SAOCOM 1A carries a high-resolution instrument called a synthetic aperature radar that will be used for emergency management during disasters and for land monitoring. CONAE will operate the satellite as part of the Argentine-Italian System of Satellites with the Italian Space Agency, coordinating observations with Italy's four Cosmo-Skymed X-band SAR satellites.

SAOCOM 1B is planned to launch next year. Flying both satellite constellations along the same orbit supports a rapid response by providing radar readings in emergency situations.
