Mystery Deepens Around Missing Saudi Journalist Jamal Khashoggi

Turkey has summoned the Saudi ambassador to request the kingdom's "full cooperation" in an investigation into the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who Turkish officials say was killed while visiting the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

Fears are growing over missing Washington Post writer Jamal Khashoggi, after Turkish officials said they believed he had been murdered.

At about midnight local time, Reuters claims two Turkish officials have leaked that their intelligence suggests Khashoggi was killed shortly after entering the consulate.

Earlier Oct. 8, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan urged the Saudi consulate to prove whether or not Khashoggi exited the building after entering, saying the consulate officials "can't get away with [simply] saying "he left the building".

On the back of the preliminary police investigation, Ankara announced Saturday it had opened an official probe into his disappearance. Turkish officials say they believe Khashoggi is being held inside the consulate building, which they can not search without an invitation.

President Trump said on Tuesday that he warned Saudi Arabia's King Salman he would not last in power "for two weeks" without the backing of the us military.

Saudi Arabia's powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has said the stalled sale of a minority stake in oil giant Saudi Aramco will go ahead, promising an initial public offering (IPO) by 2021.

He said The Post was committed to discovering the truth and that if the investigation showed any Saudi government involvement, the news organisation would view it as a flagrant attack on one of its journalists.

Khashoggi said Saudis were expected to "accept, with gratitude, the social reforms that I have long called for while keeping silent on other matters - ranging from the Yemen quagmire, hastily executed economic reforms, the blockade of Qatar, discussions about an alliance with Israel to counter Iran, and last year's imprisonment of dozens of Saudi intellectuals and clerics". And the end result is that we succeeded, and the United States of America under the leadership of President Obama failed, for example in Egypt.

Fred Hiatt, the director of the Washington Post's editorial page, said if the reports were true "it is a monstrous and unfathomable act".

"I have raised Jamal's disappearance personally with the Saudi ambassador, and while we await more information, know we will respond accordingly to any state that targets journalists overseas", he wrote.

The Saudi source said a security team including Saudi investigators had arrived in Istanbul on Saturday to take part in the investigation into his disappearance.

"We don't need that on our border", he said.

The crown prince, in an interview with Bloomberg on Friday, offered to allow Turkish authorities to search the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, saying: "We have nothing to hide".

The Committee to Protect Journalists said it was alarmed by reports Khashoggi may have been killed inside the consulate. He writes out of a sense of love for his country and deep faith in human dignity and freedom, ' Hiatt said in a statement on the U.S. newspaper's website.

His criticisms appeared in both the Arab and Western press.

Khashoggi accused the crown prince in April of "peddling revisionist history" by blaming the events of 1979 - the siege of the Grand Mosque of Mecca and the Iranian Revolution - for Saudi Arabia's problems. His foreign policy moves have been extremely aggressive, including his military support of the government in Yemen against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels and nearly going to war with Qatar due to their support of the Iranian regime.

Salman said that Khashoggi, who was once close to the ruling family in Saudi Arabia, had "always been honest".
