Palestinian gunman kills two Israelis in occupied West Bank, army says

Israeli security forces search the northern West Bank after a fatal shooting attack in Barkan Industrial Park in the northern West Bank

Israeli security forces were continuing their hunt on Monday for the Palestinian terrorist who shot dead two Israelis in an industrial zone in the northern West Bank a day earlier, detaining members of his family for interrogation.

The suspect, a 23-year-old Palestinian, had a permit to work in the industrial zone, army spokesman Jonathan Conricus said, adding that Israel is treating the incident as a terrorist attack.

The two who were critically injured were a man and a woman in their 30s, the Magen David Adom medical service said.

The other woman shot in the incident was taken to hospital, where doctors said her injuries were not life-threatening.

Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said the Israeli army and police are searching for the shooter.

Naalwa used a homemade gun, known locally as a "Carlo", according to the army, in what security forces believe was a "lone-wolf attack", meaning he was not part of a militant organisation or acting on its behalf. "I am sure we will catch him and bring him to justice soon".

But other workers in the industrial zone suggested the attack was carried out by a disgruntled employee and was not politically motivated.

"We applaud this heroic operation and affirm that it comes as a natural response to the Israeli occupation's crimes at the expense of the Palestinian people", the terror group said in a statement, citing "settlers storming the Al-Aqsa Mosque", attempts of the "occupation authorities" to demolish the illegal Khan al-Ahmar outpost and "daily incursions into the West Bank" as justification for the attack.

Speaking with Channel 10 television, Bodankin said the suspect had entered the offices to fix an electrical problem, only to open fire at a secretary and senior manager sitting nearby.

The army has launched an investigation into how Na'alwa was able to smuggle his weapon into the gated industrial park and into whether he had bound Levengrond Yehezkel with the intention of taking her hostage.

A wave of Palestinian attacks against Israelis broke out in 2015, but they have since become sporadic.

More than 600,000 Jews live in about 140 settlements built since Israel's 1967 occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Israeli leaders blame Palestinian violence, "incitement" and intransigence for the lack of progress in peace efforts.
