IPCC: Report makes case for more ambitious global climate pact

A chart that's part of a new report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change shows a range of global warming pos

"EGU concurs with, and supports, the findings of the SR15 that action to curb the most risky consequences of human-induced climate change is urgent, of the utmost importance and the window of opportunity extremely limited".

Key points in the report include maintaining the current global temperature at 1.5ºC. And, you know, there's a very - two very strong messages out of it.

Where Has The Warning Come From?

In a report recently published by the United Nations' (UN) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), it predicted a bleak future for the entire world with increasing food shortages and large masses of coral reefs dying off within the next 22 years.

As underlined in the assessment, which was written by leading climate scientists, achieving this goal will "require rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society".

It furthers the Paris Agreement of 2015, where and aim of limiting global temperature rises to "well below" 2C was set.

"What I hope this report will do is change the discourse on mitigation, with countries understanding mitigation not as a burden but as an opportunity", said Diana Ürge-Vorsatz, vice-chair of the Working Group III. "The next few years are probably the most important in our history".

This means that any remaining emissions would need to be balanced by removing Carbon dioxide from the air.

Although he didn't specify which reports he was referring to, he has often cited research by the conservative-leaning Heritage Foundation when trying to make the case that cutting carbon emissions would have little effect on global temperatures.

Currently, the world has seen 1C of warming over the past 115 years, according to a United States report last year.

However, it does make clear the consequences of warming above that level: more heat waves, more severe rain and snow events, higher sea levels, damage to agriculture and displacement of millions of people. Global sea levels rose 17cm in the 20th century.

- The global temperature is now rising by 0.2C per decade.

Scientists have long warned that mankind should limit warming to 2 deg C to avoid catastrophic climate change.

If the average global temperature temporarily exceeded 1.5C, additional carbon removal techniques would be required to return warming to below 1.5C by 2100.

What's the difference? 2 degrees means no more coral reefs, while 1.5 degrees mean only most will be wiped out.

Small islands and coastal cities such as NY and Mumbai risk going underwater without the installation of sea barriers. It would also cut down on species loss and extinction and reduce the impact on various ecosystems.

Hare noted: "The advantages of early action are made stark in this report - especially regarding the sustainable development benefits, around poverty alleviation, health and access to clean energy".

What Has Been The Reaction So Far?

"The good news is that some of the kinds of actions that would be needed to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius are already underway around the world, but they would need to accelerate", said Working Group I Co-Chair Valerie Masson-Delmotte. We can't find any historical analogies for it. "Nor are we bound to go and tip money into that big climate fund".

The report explains why it's so important that we meet the 1.5 degree target, and how hard that will be to accomplish.
