USA raises pressure on Saudi Arabia over missing journalist

Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was last seen a week ago before entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul

"At this time, I implore President Trump and first lady Melania Trump to help shed light on Jamal's disappearance", Ms Cengiz wrote. As Mr. Kaine rightly put it, "We will have to analyze everything about the U.S. -Saudi relationship", including military sales and cooperation.

White House National Security Advisor, Ambassador John Bolton and White House Senior Advisor, Jared Kushner spoke to Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman yesterday about the missing Washington Post journalist.

"It's a very sad situation, this is a bad situation", Trump said.

American lawmakers in both parties have been more critical of Saudi Arabia, with several suggesting officials in the kingdom could be sanctioned if they were found to be involved in Khashoggi's disappearance and alleged killing. CNN has not been able to independently confirm these reports, and the Saudi government has denied them. Among them was a forensics expert, it says.

Khashoggi disappeared when he was at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October to obtain official papers.

The Post, citing anonymous US officials familiar with the intelligence, said Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered an operation to lure Jamal Khashoggi from his home in Virginia to Saudi Arabia and then detain him.

The footage all seemed to come from surveillance cameras, which would have been posted throughout the district housing the Saudi consulate and other diplomatic missions.

He told conservative talk show host Hugh Hewitt that Khashoggi's disappearance is "a great concern for the United States of America. And you know what, there are other ways of punishing", he said.

'We have to find out who did it, ' Trump said.

The Post, citing anonymous USA officials familiar with the intelligence, says Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered an operation to lure Jamal Khashoggi from his home in Virginia to Saudi Arabia and then detain him. But senior members of Congress with access to US intelligence reporting feared the worst.

Further reports said that a group of 15 Saudis entered the consulate on the same day as Khashoggi and soon left the country, and that Khashoggi had been dismembered and smuggled out of Turkey in small boxes.

While expressing support for joint Saudi-Turkish efforts to look into his disappearance, they said the Saudi government must provide "a complete and detailed response", indicating that such a message had been conveyed "directly" to Riyadh.

Khashoggi, who was considered close to the Saudi royal family, had become a critic of the current government and Prince Mohammed, the 33-year-old heir apparent who has shown little tolerance for criticism.

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday evening that United States intelligence intercepts outlined a Saudi plan to detain Mr Khashoggi.

Bin Salman's personal bodyguard has been identified in Turkish media as being among 15 Saudis who flew in to Istanbul and then quickly left on the day of Khashoggi's disappearance. Turkish sources said they believe Khashoggi was killed inside the building and removed, allegations that Riyadh dismisses as baseless.

Washington Post publisher Fred Ryan issued the newspaper's latest plea for information Tuesday, saying neither Saudi Arabia nor Turkey has provided satisfactory answers.
