Putin invited to visit Washington next year, National Security Adviser Bolton says

Putin warns of a new arms race with America

Assistant to the United States President for National Security Affairs, John Bolton visited Georgia on October 25-26.

President Vladimir Putin warned on Wednesday of a new arms race if America pulls out of weapons treaties, and said Russian Federation would respond "in kind" to any new U.S. missiles placed on European soil. If accepted, Putin's visit to the United States would be expected to take place early next year, he said.

"Of course, be inaccurate to say that we are prepared to impose more sanctions on Russian Federation, we will do what we need to do, and what we believe is necessary", said Bolton during a visit to Georgia.

Putin and Trump have met several times on the sidelines of multilateral gatherings, but only had one bilateral summit in the Finnish capital in July.

"We may - it's being discussed right now", the president told reporters at the White House.

The INF treaty, signed by ex-US president Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev in 1987, prohibits the development and deployment of land-based intermediate-range cruise missiles.

It would be Putin's first trip to the US since 2015 when he met with President Barack Obama.

National Security Adviser John Bolton says he discussed US plans to withdraw from missile treaty with Russian Federation; national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin reports from the Pentagon. Trump came under fire following that summit for a perceived cozying up to Putin.

Trump said Tuesday he will "probably" meet with Putin during the visit. Russia, on the other hand, has contended it's in compliance with the accord.
